Morning.
I am currently looking to buy a new monitor as an upgrade from my current 15" TFT.
I am looking at the Dell 2007wfp, I don't know much about monitor ins and outs but the refresh time on this at 16ms seems a bit high compared to the Samsung sm226bw of 2ms.
The monitor will mainly be used for gaming, so I was wondering if the 16ms response time would affect my gaming in anyway or I should go for the Samsung due to its 2ms response time?

Thanks :)

Should be fairly easy choice! you gotta ask yourself if your really arsed about perfect colours or if your more into gaming.

Arsed about correct colours = dell s-ips

Gaming = sammy 22"

I bought the sammy 22" recently and i've been extremely impressed with it from a gaming pov.

You're not comparing like for like. The Dell times are the ISO standard of Black to White, whilst the Samsung is measured using Grey to Grey (G2G) timings.

Like above, the quoted Dell response time is the more modest ISO response time. The G2G response time (as is used for the samsung) is 8ms. There is really little difference between these. I haven't noticed any ghosting on my dell, and neither has anybody else that i know of.

If you can afford the extra for the dell then it's well worth it.

I dont think you should look at it like this, the dell is well up to spec on response time, its just that Dell have used the iso standard and not the consumer impressing G2G. The dell has better colour reproduction, and keeps up with no ghosting :) if you can afford one get it, TN panels just dont compare with S-IPS.

Upgraded to two Dell 2007WFP last Aug from a 17" LG L1710B (rated 20ms), which ghosted quite a bit. Really impressed with my Dell's, not had any problems with FPS PC games like CSS, COD.. and on my 360 (till it died) COD3 was fantastic.

I paid £305 each for mine at the time and would pay it again now - however if the 2407WFP were £450 at the time I would probably have paid the extra for them ;)

I've got the 2007WFP too and it's the quickest TFT I've ever owned, quicker than my 8 ms LG 32" LCDTV and quicker than the 8 ms TN panel 19" SM913B I used to own. I played plenty of really fast games on it like UT2004, Fear, Doom 3 etc.

Got to agree with Sukh, TN panels don't cut the mustard, especially the viewing angles.

I agree that S-IPS panels are far better than TN's but i always laugh at these comments.

Do viewing angles really matter when you're playing a game? I don't know that many people that sit at an angle to their monitor while gaming. :)

As far as i can tell from hearing peoples comments the 2007wfp can't be touched for the price.

Yes they do matter. Viewing angles don't just affect someone sat off to the side at 50 degrees, they affect the person sat still right in front of the monitor. Vertical viewing angles are so poor on TN that if you set the screen to one colour there's a noticeable gradient from the top to the bottom of the screen. The top of the screen looks noticeably dark and the bottom pale, which of course ruins the colour accuracy. You notice it on webpages, applications and even in games and movies. Also every time your head moves up and down even an inch you can see colour shift across the whole screen, which is unpleasant and makes you want to constantly adjust the tilt.

TN has other weaknesses too, like not being able to do true 24bit colour, generally poor colour accuracy and it's significantly less sharp than an IPS panel.

I found the two TN panels I briefly owned wholey unsatisfactory for gaming.

I've seen a Dell 3007wfp SIPS panel and was very impressed with the viewing angles (definately needed on such a large screen) and colour reproduction was also very very good but i'd have to say it's not such a huge leap (apart from in real estate of course) in terms of these points from my own Belinea 22".

Just comes down to how sensitive you are to the weaknesses of the TN panels. If i had the money i'd definately get a 2007 or GX2 (even a 3007 if i robbed a bank and had another GTX! :p ) without question but if you're limited to a £200 budget or so some TN's do a really good job.

You would say 'sensitive', I would say 'observant' :p

For sure not everyone is going to see it the same way though, whether to pay £200 for a TN 22" or £250 for a better quality IPS 20". Personally having owned two TN panels (one the well rated SM913B) I would always come down on the side of the better quality IPS panel, especially with the resolution being the same and the price difference being so much smaller these days. Wasn't too long ago the 2007WFP was £380+.

I had an old TN panel about 4-5 years ago and I must say playing games like CS was VERY annoying with the vertical viewing angle. I remember putting cushions on my chair to lift me up a bit more as certain areas would be very dark and I was forever trying to raise myself up to see if someone was hiding in the shadows ;)

Bear in mind that the price for the Dell 2007wfp has currently shot through the roof since there seem to be none around. For the price they charge on their own page (£320), you would be FAR better off getting the fabled NEC 20WGX2(Pro).

I was thinking of buying a new monitor (Samsung SM-226BW) but wasnt sure about it. Presently have a viewsonic vp730 just now. Id just like to say that the information given in this thread has taught me a lot and i didnt realise about the different type of lcd screens you get. Thanks :D

But OcUK have the 2007WFP in stock for £252. A few people who have used both have commented here that the difference is quite small too.

i'd agree with that, having tested both, i doubt most users could spot much reall difference in practice

The NEC looks nicer, stand and all, but the Dell's stand is more functional. The glossy screen would also annoy me as i sit with a window behind me so reflections will be a problem.
