Dell 2405FPW to Sammy 26"

Hi all,

I'm currently wondering if this is worth it for starters.

I have a Dell 2405FPW, and whilst a great monitor, I don't like upgrading my hardware every 6 months to play the latest games at the native resolution. I've got a Panasonic AE700 Projector which runs at 1280x720, and my PC seems runs great at max on that res, so I thought moving to one of the Sammy 26" here, as this uses the same resolution as the projector.

I mainly play BF2 and the Source games - will the Sammy be up for the job? I know a lot of people use it for Xbox 360's, and somoene from these boards has one (posted some screenshots with BF2).

Secondly, if I do decide to take the plunge and buy it, I'll obviously need to sell the Dell. How's the warrenty work with Dell's? Is there a serial number somewhere on it that's needed to give them a phone call?

Thanks for your help,

-RaZ

moved to Home Cinema after discussing this with Monkee off the boards. Hopefully some of the guys in here can give advice on that Samsung LCD TV and how suited they are to gaming :)

ps, what model is it?

I don't think there are any TV's that do 1280x720 natively that reslution is what you'd expect. It will of course display 720p with no trouble, I have a Samsung TV with a native res of 1440x900 that I run at 1280x720 so I can clone the display with my projector.

I mentioned in another post about the reason behind the 1366x768. This is so the TV can support non-widescreen games at 1024x768, if they went for 1280x720, then the maximum (non-widescreen supporting) game resolution will be 800x600.

you can't honestly think lcd tv's are designed around the tiny minority of people who play pc games on them can you?

It's simply because someone decided to keep the ratios in line with pc resolutions and there's very few companies that actually manufacture panels so it's stuck around.

All the new high definition stuff including consoles, tv broadcasts and the new consoles will run at 720p therefore all HDTV's are designed with that in mind - you'll often find via the digital inputs you can only have 1280x720.
You might get a slight blurryness when viewing text on your desktop but in games and video there shouldn't be anything noticable - I certainly have no problems with it and mines doing more scaling than yours will be.

sorry fella i dont have a digi cam, the cam on my n90 is wicked but windows has issues with it :(

Trust me its awesome, and if you lookin the sammy thread in this forum you will find some excellent pics of people using it on their desktops. Made me buy one ;)

But trust me you wont wanna go back once you get one!! I want the 32" now lol :D

MoNkeE - The Samsung is fantastic, you wont be dissapointed. However since you are planning on using it primarily with your PC then I would recommend the LG 26LX2R instead since it offers 1:1 pixel mapping. The picture quality when connected to your PC should be superior to the Sammy.

The LG is a HD LCD TV designed specifically for connection to a PC. I very nearly went for the Samsung myself but once I saw the 1:1 Pixel mapping in action on the PC I knew the LG was for me. :)

EDIT: I have since found out that the Samsung also offers 1:1 Pixel mapping but only over the VGA port. Shouldn't be a problem to most people.

Could ya throw some pictures my way? I'm more than happy to have my mind swayed - although I must say I love the style of the Samsung :)

Absolutely, as long as you dont mind them being taken with a Phone camera. Funnily enough I actually far preferred the styling of the LG to the Sammy also, which was the final nail in the coffin. Thats all subjective of course though.

I'll take some in a minute and get back to you. :)

Click on the thumbnails for bigger pics. Then click on the pics again to get the full size image.

These pictures are taken with a Sony Ericsson W800i so the quality isn't very good. They really don't do the TV justice as in real life the image quality is unbelievable, easily as sharp as any "real" PC monitor. The game is COD 2 Running at 1360x768 with 1:1 Pixel mapping.

The is the best LCD of this size I have seen bar none for PC usage. The 1:1 Pixel mapping makes a huge difference. There are a couple of other LCD's out that use 1:1 pxel mapping via the DVI port which should offer comparable quality when hooked up to a PC but I don't have any first hand experience with them.

If you want to use the screen primarily as a PC monitor go for a 1:1 pixel mapping LCD. If not, then just go for whichever you like best.

More pics to follow in my next post...

EDIT: Just a note... Text on the Lg 26LX2R is absolutely perfect. No blurriness whatsoever when you set your desktop to 1360x768 so that 1:1. In fact it is even pretty much perfect at non-native resolutions. It looks as good as any LCD designed for PC use when viewing web pages etc. I tried to take some photos to show off the sharpness of the text but my phone just couldn't do it justice.

Enjoy :)
