Was this the predecessor to the current U2410? I understand that the 2405FPW isn't an IPS monitor - does anyone know the major differences I would notice between the two?

Yes & No ....The dell 2405FPW is a 6 year old monitor (released in 2005)
but it was dell top of the range 24" monitor for 2 years till they released the 2407 and then the 2408

The 2405 is still a great monitor (i own both a 2405 & U2410 ;) )

The 2405 has a higher input lag of 60ms where the U2410 is only about 12ms

as you've identified, the 2405FPW wasn't an IPS model and so characteristics of the performance may vary if you compared with the U2410. The U2410 is also wide gamut and so the colour space is different to that of the standard gamt 2405. Responsiveness, input lag and overall viewing angles should also show some improvements moving from a 2405 to a U2410.

note, there were also a lot of models in between as they've moved from the 2405FPW to 2407WFP, 2407WFP-HC, 2408WFP, U2410...and soon to be U2412M :)
 
i maybe have the chance to get a used 2405 for about 100. All aspects seem to comply with what i want for an upgrade to my current eizo S2202W, what is though the situation with responsiveness on this monitor ?
 
It wouldn't be the responsiveness I'd be concerned about. That is a very old model and runs very hot with powerful CCFL backlights. Depending on how heavily it has been used it probably doesn't have much more life left in it. I have had bad experiences with similar Dell monitors in the way of a loud 'pop' and smoke and goodbye capacitors as well as them simply refusing to turn on (after around 3.5 years of moderate use). The person selling it for £100 probably wants rid of it before it happens to them.

Back to the issue of responsiveness - the 2405WFP is a PVA panel model with pretty poorly implemented overdrive (I'm sure Baddass won't mind me linking you to this picture which shows the extent of the visual mess). If you are at all concerned about responsiveness then this isn't a good model to choose - even a PVA panel with much better overdrive implementation suffers from noticeable ghosting issues in a wide range of transitions, particularly high contrast ones. Input lag is reportedly rather high on this model as well.

And I have some that still work great - but the odds of it working for much longer are sadly limited.

Its actually in an auction that so far doesnt seem to have attracted much biding. No such details provided. (actually almost no info). I am waiting an email response from poster regarding hours and years of usage.
 
It is something that depends on the individual unit and also the usage patterns. Not just the overall hours of usage, but how long it is often left on for and used continuously and the luminance settings used. Personally I would be much more willing to sell than buy this product at this time. I would never buy it if responsiveness was important to me anyway.
