My dell 2407 that has served me well for 4 years went pop when turning it on and smelt of fried electrics. :(

Been out of the loop as I've never had any reason to complain about it until now so not really sure what I should replace it with.

Features I want are 1920x1200 res, multiple inputs and a decent stand. Other things like card reader and usb are a bonus but not vital really.

Obvious choice seems to be the U2410 which has all the above features nailed but is there any other screens I should consider?
I've seen a few worrying comments of people with U2410s have faults, but it seems every monitor has someone complaining about backlight bleeding or similar somewhere on the web!

Any thoughts?

ps - any magic ways to fix dead screens? :p

Check with dell to see if its under warranty still first of all mate.

Some screens had 3 year warranty others had 5 years.

Always worth a try.

Is it just me or has there been several reports of people who bought the 2407 when it was new (around 4 years ago) experiencing exactly the same thing recently? Sounds as if they are just reaching the end of their natural life. I often find power-hungry CCFL backlights last 3-4 years and then give out. The heat they generate also wears down other components - as Datamonkey suggests check the warranty period.

No, it's not just you. There have been a few threads about this recently. I just hope my 2407WFP doesn't go anytime soon.

If you've had it for 4 years then the warranty is most likely over. There is a possibility that you can fix it yourself. If may be a broken component that can be replaced. It may be worth trying. Have a look at this thread on Dell's forums.

If you do get a new monitor I would definitely recommend the Dell U2410, if you're willing to spend the money on it. It has a great quality IPS panel, and in my opinion it's worth the price.

As above you may well be able to fix. My Samsung started flashing on/off/on/off from boot a few weeks ago until it got to the point where it would barely come on at all.

Turned it the problem was 2 swollen capacitors on the internal PSU. £2 later and it was sorted, so well worth doing some research before you bin it.

From the symptoms it is highly likely to be capacitors or similiar on the power supply stage thats gone - with a little electrical expertise its potentially fixeable (with a soldering iron, plenty of time and a good bit of patience no doubt).

Hey pink.

I can give it a go at fixing it if you like?

Fixed a few 2408's that had broken PCB's...
If not then if you stick it on ebay someone will buy it for its pannel. as S-PVA pannels are good ones.

I'll have a look and see if it is the capacitor like others have had. Might buy a U2410 anyway though! Then if I fix this one I'll just have to have 2x 24" screens - or I can sell it :)

I'd get someone to have a look at it and determine why it broke, if it's not your fault I'd take them to court for it under SOGA.

That's ridiculous that a £400 monitor only lasted you 4 years. I'd expect a £100 monitor to last longer then that.
