Hey,

Just wanting some help as I'm tempted to finally buy a high quality Dell monitor I'm just confused about everything that has been said about these monitors -with all these model numbers and different versions flying around on the net I'm finding it hard to establish which is the best.

I've come to the conclusion that the 2407 WFP A04 Rev is the best one you can get at the moment, apparently fixing banding issues and there is no ghosting? (that correct?).

I've also read that the HC version is the one to get as its got "higher colour" on the screen itself - however after some reading it seems that the HC version only goes up to Rev A02...

So i'm slightly confused as to whether the HC is better or the A04 - The net brings up the HC version has ghosting issues where the A04 does not, but then the HC has better colour than the A04?

Lol i'm in a mess and would really appriciate it if one of you guys could help me out.

My current monitor is a Samsung 226BW, and i'm wondering if the colour difference on the screen will be that noticeable? Hoping for a wow factor to be honest.

Thank you

First of all what do you want it for?
-Desktop WP etc
-Games
-Movies
-Image editing
-All off the above

The 2407WFP and 2407WFP-HC are different screens, that why they have different revisions. The HC is a higher colour gamut screen, which makes it better for image editing. Thats the one i have- I like it a lot.
I use it for some gaming and its fine, also looks good to me for movies. If you're a hardcore gamer playing lots of FPS the lag might annoy a little, the latest Dell 24" has a reduced lag mode for gaming.
Neither of these screens are current models, so if you want them its second hand only.

...or if you're buying new then you could go for the 2408WFP which is also very good, but again may not meet your specific requirements.

Hi

Yes i'd be buying second hand.

Pretty much all of the above to be honest - do a bit of everything.

So it looks like the A04 is the best all-rounder?

Also does anyone know how it'd compare with a samsung 226bw?

The Samsung 226BW is a TN panel; the Dell is a VA panel. The Samsung will respond more quickly for games but image quality and colour representation will be a lot better on the Dell. Obviously the Samsung will also have a lower resolution, and from experience I can tell you those extra pixels are well worthwhile!

Well I have just changed from a Samsung 215TW to a 2407 WFP Rev A04.

Main uses are gaming and general browsing / usage.

Best decision I have made. Worth noting that my Gfx card prefers 1920x1200 (Dell) rather than the 1680x1050 (samsung) so it looks much better anyway. BTW Saphhire 4890 2gig

Thank you. :). omaragha do you have any real-life images?

Is there any difference between the Dell 2407WFP A04 vs. Dell 2408WFP - apart from the extra HDMI and DisplayPort connections?

Judging by the similarity of the panel model numbers the 2408WFP is closer to the 2407WFP-HC than the 2407WFP. The colour range is certainly very good on the 2408WFP according to the reviews, but without a comparison chart for the panel models it's hard to be sure. As for the A04 firmware, they start again at A00 for each new model so it's again hard to judge. Some people reported problems with the 2408WFP A00 firmware which were apparently fixed in A01, but I've not had any problems with my 2408WFP screens and I'm 95% certain they are A00.

Thanks CBJ.

Trying to decide whether the 2408 is worth the extra... as I heard about better colour 110% vs 72% colour (apparently) but I also think I read about ghosting/banding with the 2408.... the 2407 A04 seems to be the only 'stable' good all-rounder?

If you are a graphic artist with a perfectionist's eye for colour or a twitch gamer for whom every millisecond counts then your concerns may be well-founded. If you're a "normal" PC user with who just wants to use their screens to do whatever they are doing, then quite honestly you are probably spending more time than you need to over some of these fine details. In the end you're talking about the difference between two screens which are both very highly rated.

The only other thing I can tell you to help you decide is what I see in front of me, which is a pair of 2408WFP screens which are a massive improvement over anything else I've seen or used, and that still never fail to impress me even after using them for over 18 months. I never did get around to checking the firmware version, for the simple reason that they were so good and I couldn't spot the supposed problems that the A00 models were meant to have.

thanks for your input cbj.

the only screens i've seen in the flesh are the 24" apple monitors and they are jaw dropping.... are the dells the same?

I have heard of people sending back under RAM 2407WFP to Dell and getting 2408's as a replacement and not being happy about it. I cant substantiate that info with a link as it was one of the many I read whilst reseraching the best bang for buck monitor upto £250 MAX and the 2407 represented that for me. If you use google I am sure you will find what you need, the name 'Hardforum' rings a bell, try a search.

Just so you know my primary use of this pc and monitor is gaming, I play TF2, Empire Total War, MW2 and Pes 2010. I havent noticed any ghosting on this screen at all - apparently there are beter screens for colour ?? That maybe true but I am astonished at how good this screen is for the money bear in mind I did upgrade from a 215TW which was good for its day as well. From what I understand getting a Rev A04 on the 2407WFP is a must BTW.

I can't say that I've seen the Mac screens, but checking the panel info I can see that many of them are IPS-based. From what I've seen of IPS screens they are indeed pretty jaw-dropping. The Dell screens are not IPS but in my purely subjective opinion they are really not that far off matching the display quality. Incidentally Dell do now do an IPS-based screen, the U2410, but judging by the longish thread about it somewhere in this forum, they are still having a few teething problems with it.

One final comment: I was just reading some comparative figures for the various recent Dell screens, and if you can get hold of a 2407WFP-HC it looks like you might get the best of both worlds, i.e. higher colour range than the 2407WFP without the input lag of the 2408WFP. That is, assuming there aren't other issues with it. Actually finding one could be tricky though; I didn't even know it had existed until you mentioned it.
