the optimum resolution is 1920x1200 but in some games when i set the resolution to lets say 1600x1200 i see black borders around the screen
is it possible to remove those? is it because of the game or settings on the screen itself?

You're currently running the screen in 1:1 mode, you need to change it to fill mode.

It's an option in the "Display Settings" submenu on the monitor :)

:edit: The image will be stretched sideways though, not sure if that bothers you.

It might be something to do with your drivers, try looking through your settings for something about scaling and set it to use your monitors built in scaling.
