I got myself a new Dell XPS 15z laptop and the screen on it makes my desktop monitor look very ordinary (something I thought I'd never say). :(

I guess it's due to the lack of LED back-light, but the laptop is so much clearer, brighter and the colours are more vivid.

I've always wanted a second 24" monitor, so I am considering buying a new LED backlit monitor, and using my current one to extend my desktop.

Suggestions? I'd prefer to stay with Dell but I don't really know what's around? Or would I be better off going with a 30" monitor and selling the 2407 to put toward it?

Your new 15z will have a far brighter backlight and a glossy surface which will allow for higher contrast and colour intensity even though it's still a TN panel. Most desktop displays are matte for anti glare reasons, like your 2407 (pva panel)

If you want a 30", take a look at the dell u3011 or the hp zr30w both are ips and matte.

If not, take a look at the u2410 for 24" and u2711 for 27". Again, ips and matte.

Get a minidisplayport to displayport cable to drive them and you're good to go.

Is what I have. I use DVI to my monitor.

For your laptop, mini dp to dp is the best option. For your 5850 you can use dvi or hdmi as your laptop will be taking up the dp port. If you opt for the 27" or 30" you only have dvi (dual link) as the option as hdmi doesn't have enough bandwidth.
