I know others have had this problem. Red is way too red if you know what I mean. Backing off the red slider only turns white blue. To try and fix this problem I've been messing around with the monitor settings. I was getting nowhere and reset to factory default. I then selected rRGB. Viola! colours are more natural, red no longer burns my retinas, no pink tinge on very small text.

Hope this helps others having this problem.

What is rRGB by the way.

This is because the Dell 2408 is what's called a "wide-gamut monitor", it can display more reds and greens (and hence they can overpower and produce an over-saturated mess).

Your problem is the reason that IMHO wide-gamut monitors have no place in a consumer monitor as they just cause problems. Your only real hope of taming the thing is to calibrate it, either by eye (not ideal) or by having to fork out extra cash for a Colorimeter such as the Huey Pro (£99).

I'm of the opinion that Dell have gone the Wide-Gamut route for two reasons. 1: To have a higher number in a spec column and thus sucker people into believing their monitor is better and 2: try and convince pro's that they can get a much cheaper monitor and forgoe the lacie's, Eizo's and NEC's of this world.

the sRGB mode is an emulation of the sRGB colour space, ie limiting the gamut to around 72% of the NTSC colour space, from the monitors default of 102%. It's an emulation mode only, and while it will make your reds and greens more "limited" (since it reduces the colour space coverage in these areas mostly), it's colour accuracy is very poor. It's also very difficult to calibrate the screen to any where near accurate colours in the sRGB preset mode. See more info here :)

Very helpful review. I've now altered Contrast, Brightness, and RGB to the values suggested and red is no longer over saturated. Colours are very vivid but I can live with that.

I suppose that coming from a dull 19" Samsung to this Dell, I am not used to vibrant colours.

EDIT: Had a look at some photos, vids and other programs and am now happy with this monitor.

Thanks for this review, I think I understand the problem with my monitor much better now. Cheers! :)

See this is the good thing about having Baddass as a mate he can come round with his stupidly expensive lacie eye thingy and set your monitor up for you! and all you have to do is let him take a few pics for his website :D
