I have looked into a new build route but its just not going to be cost effective at the moment so i'm looking to upgrade what i have first.

I have an old work pc which is a Dell 3020 sff, i have increased the ram to 8gb. i think the hard drive is 256 or 512?

im adding the following shopping list but need advise on a couple of extras.. I think an ssd and maybe bigger Hard drive? plus i need a bluetooth dongle for our printer and a wifi dongle for internet and i headphone mic splitter. i know i can get bits cheaper separately but i'd like to get it all as one order.

total budget is £300 and i'm set on the bits in the basket already.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £240.07 (includes shipping: £11.10)

To be honest just buy the cheapest you can find. Can't understand why you'd spend that much on a keyboard and mouse though. I've read your other thread and assume this is for your 13yr old son? As someone who has 3 children for whom I have built systems over the years I can advise you to buy a cheap keyboard and mouse because they'll get ruined.

I'd get the mic splitter elsewhere as they are usually very cheap

Don't get that GPU. You'll be disapponted with the performance. You can buy a single slot GTX 1050 Ti from minor manufacturers. For example the Aetina M4-P107mDP or the ASL G1504 (note: I haven't used either). Nvidia do a Quadro P1000 which would also suit.

cheers quartz, i appreciate the response, i'm struggling to find a 1050 ti that will fit at a reasonable price. if i'm going to spend more £££'s on the above then it will be more cost effective to upgrade the whole system, but i'm not willing to invest that sort of cash on a new hobby until i know that it will be worthwhile.

I've looked into the 1030 gddr5 and i know its not the best performer but it will do what i need for the time being.

the 1030 can still game to an extent and probably the best suited to that computer more so if that dell does happen to have a pcie power restriction as i highlighted in your other thread.

Agreed. I've got the previous Optiplex 790 with a GT 1030 plugged into the TV...

I'm hoping to get 60 fps 1080p on medium settings on fortnite. Plus we get a cheaper route into keyboard and mouse gaming. If we don't get into it I'll just sell the lot and get an xbox one x and a 4k TV

well if you prepared to get an xbox one X, but also want to try pc then buy the gpu and at hte same time buy the xbox then you can switch between the 2, unless you want a really big 4k tv then you can get good deals to keep in budget.. basically buy it all at once

just a little update for anyone else that was interested, i got everything set up apart from the SSD as i need a caddy for the cd slot to convert it, and the budget graphics card runs fortnite at 60+ fps on medium/high settings so my son is very happy!
Hopefully we stick with pc gaming and look to upgrade in the future. I'm going to add a few more games like CSGO, GTA5, rocket league, overwatch etc.
