Yes... Its a dell.
Dell dimension 9150 to be precise
Here are the specs that i know of.
Graphics - Ati Radeon X600
Processor- Intel Pentium 4 3.0GhZ (Dont lynch me please)
Memory - 1 GIG DDR2
Yup, thats about it. Dosn't even say what kind of mobo.
So heres the problem.
One day we had a big crash, something like a keyboard error, which worked fine. (lol). So after about a week of hard drive repairs, we got the computer working again. By the looks of it, nothing had really happenened.
Thats until I tried to play halo (I love halo
Something about how it needed 3d acceleration.
So automatically I go into device manager.
A yellow exclamation mark next to my display adaptor
Clicked on properties of it. And it says
"Radeon X600 series, This device cannot start."
I think to myself... How the heck can it not start, im bloody well looking at the moniter right now.
So then I run a dxdiag, it says "This system is running the generic video driver. It can't even realise what card im using. It just says N/A
Next step is of course to reinstall drivers, which I do.
Update them and everything.
To no avail whatsoever, the radeon catalyst control centre won't let me open
up cause it dosn't detect any ATI hardware.
I uninstall and reinstall hardware on device manager, hey presto the exclamation mark is gone. But obviously neither DXdiag or catalyst can detect it. So I restart the computer, and the exclamation mark reappears
Time to investigate. The original crash was supposedly caused by "Power Failure" So I rip open the case, not literally of course. First of all im choked by the dust in there. So I dust it out a bit. Then I look at my lovely dell 380 Watt PSU. No visible damage there. No visible burning at all.
Earthed myself against a radiator and all that. Touched the heatsink on my GFX card. OWW... Kinda warm, wouldnt say it was above 60 degrees though.
So yea of course the card is starting.
I assume a dead card, so I order a replacement on a certain auction site (See I read the FAQ)
Yup it dosnt work either. Same problem.
Very limited BIOS, no obvious options to display adaptors. Except being able to change the interface from PCI-E to something else.
Sorry for the really long post, I have looked every possible place. No one else in the world seems to be having the same problem. And not being able to play any games is really beginning to annoy me.
Its probably going to be something really really obvious and i will just laugh when it works.
Thanks
(The bank of mum and dad will not allow for another computer. lol
