Using a Dell Axim X50v as a Personal Media Player

Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a X50v and using it for playing mp3's the occasional video and PDA abilities.

I would just like to know if anyone here has used an X50v as a mp3 player and how good the audio output is with headphones.

I was thinking of getting a COWON A2 but the X50v's PDA abilities could come in useful for me, as could the wireless web browsing at home (the 640*480 is handy for this). And you can buy spare batteries for it (there is also a hi-capacity battery for it too).

And of course you can play some games on it too. I've seen there is even a version of Quake2 for Pocket PC's.

I'm sure some of you are saying why not get a PSP. True a PSP would be good and cover most of my requirements but its picky about where you place your media files, it only plays 1 type of video. And the Games are too expensive, especially as thats not the main reason I would want one.

/Post your thoughts:

It appears OCUK is over £40 cheaper than buying Direct from Dell.
It says beside stock that they are made to order and may take a few days to be delivered.

Anyone bought items like this over OCUK before?
How long does it usually take for delivery?

Also does anyone know if there is a version of Winamp for Pocket PC's or something comparable?

I think if you want an mp3 player, buy an mp3 player.

If you want something which will play video as well, then get a PMP.

Do you need PDA stuff, or do you just think it's something you might use, because I guarantee you will get bored of the PDA stuff within about 30 seconds.

Yeah I could do with replacing notes and organisers with a PDA.

Also on the mp3 player from at least I can organise my music what ever way I want and don't have to use transfer software.

Also WinamPAQ is rather good and allows binding to hardware buttons.
Audio Quality is very suprising its much better than a lot of mp3 players I've had, its even more detailed than my friends Zen: Micro or my Zen:NX.

The only thing I'd worry about would be battery life, can you turn the display off when you're listening to MP3s?

Yeah you can get it to turn the display off after 30seconds, 1min etc....
Also the backlight has different brightness and duration settings too.

Playing a video on loop with a hi-cap battery and medium brightness it apparently lasts just over 8hours.

So for mp3 playback you should expect atleast 12hours ofcourse depending on how much your using the screen and changing songs etc.

Also if you change your processor speed settings to auto or low you battery life will be extended.

X50v is my favourite toy in general, but not for playing music. As said already battery life is a big issue as is the amount of mp3 on a card. Use the Axim for other things and get a quality mp3 player (just as important , get good 'phones)
