Hi.
Im looking at getting an x51v through work, and i had a few questions about it:

-- Worth it?
-- Is the serial cable just for the gps, or can it be used to telnet into things?
-- When is Windows Mobile 6 coming out, and is it likely that the x51v with run it?
-- What is the battery life on it like. Not the manufacturer figures, real world ones?

Thanks in advance all. :)

I've got an X50v upgraded to WM5 so I can pretty much answer your Qs.

1. Yeah they can be very useful provided you're prepared to use it properly and get used to checking it regularly. I'm a medical student so I have loads of useful apps on mine. Also makes a good MP3 player/video player with a 2Gig SD card.

2. No idea about the serial cable, sorry.

3. WM6 probably won't be made available iirc, check out aximsite for more info though, that has everything you could ever need :D

4. I'm not sure about the x51v, I find I rarely run low on battery unless I've got the wifi on and surfing for a good 3-4hours. Extended life batteries are dirt cheap though.

Got an x51v which is 16 months and i got £250 new which was an amazing price then because you still can't get it that cheap now from dell.

--It is the best PDA around especially with the graphics card, playing back downloaded xvids and divxs are not a problem with TCMP at all at the native res.
-- i didnt get the serial cable but it will do bluetooth GPS and CF GPS. not sure about telnet but there is a program installed called terminals services which is perhaps what you are looking for.

-- For WM6 info on the x51v look at www.aximsite.com forums for help but it looks unlikely atm. I don't think the WM6 is a major upgrade anyways. just eye candy which you can get by installing themes.

-- Battery life is a couple of hours on standard one so get the 2200mah if you are going to use it lot.

any more questions?

I have problems playing Xvid in TCMP, it just plays a few frames then pauses, then plays a few frames and pauses again. WMP plays them fine though

The main thing that concerns me is the ability of the serial cable.
As being able to configure switches with the Axim would be perfect.
Theres no clear answer around though. Some say it wont work. Some say it do. Some say it wont but will with a modified cable!? Confusing to say the least.

I plan on using it as something i can use to make notes and retrieve importent network information as im going about my daily work. Im hoping it'd allow me to cut down on the amount of paper i have all over the place with notes and appointments on.

I'd also like it to be able to sync with my Laptop, and pull all the email off it, allowing me to view it 'on the move'.

Would an Axim, or any PDA, likely forfill my needs there?
