hi

following my last post on windows home server 'vail', i have realised that the processor in my dimension 5000 doesnt have 64-bit support, and seeing as vail is only going to be available in 64-bit i sort of need it.

now my question is, will my dimension 5000 be able to support a new processor was looking at the celeron dual core 2.2GHz. the mobo is LGA775 but do you think it will be able to cope with a dual core processor?

currently it has a 3.0Ghz pentium 4 in it

cheers

ali

It seems that the Dell Dimension 5000 has the Intel 915G Express chipset and is limited to Pentium 4 processors by dell.

However, it does seem that some Pentium 4 chips do support 64 bit. What is the specific model number of your current CPU (you can check in cpu-z)?

will check when i get at home. i seem to remember reading somwhere that the 64-t p4's came out in late may 2005? but i bought my dell in january 2005, so im assuming i wouldnt have a 64-bit CPU and it says in HWmonitor that it doesnt support EM64T

cheers for the help.

Aye, that chip doesn't support 64 bit. However, if you look at this list you will see which P4 chips do support 64 bit.

I wouldn't suggest spending too much - as a cheap core 2 duo supporting motherboard + Core 2 based celeron or PDC doesn't cost much at all and you can reuse the RAM (or for that matter an AM2+ board and Athlon II).

think im gonna get a new P4 found one for £0.99. :D and if it doesnt work ill just get another one lol

thanks for the help :)
