Hi guys,

As a few of you know I picked up a Dell Dimension 9100 chassis, PSU and fans from eBay but the seller did not want to co-operate. Finally after a month I recieved it. All I want to know is the Conroe CPU compatible with this dell board? Its a socket 775 motherboard with a HUGE heatsink. Would I need to upgrade the BIOS?

Thanks,

It will depend if any of the BIOS version supports Conroe

Hmm, thanks - By their drivers page (not sure if Im allowed to post it) there arent any BIOS updates, only a BIOS flash.

Thanks, I just contacted a Dell technician who said that they dont support the Conroe. Is it possible for dell to bring out a new update that will allow the Conroe to work on this motherboard?

Thanks

Well it will most likely be that the motherboard doesn't physically support conroe. They had to modify the current motherboard specification (something to do with the power) so conroe cpus would work.

On the other hand though, it may just need a BIOS update as stated before.

Unlikely that Dell would release such a BIOS flash, since they'd want to sell new Conroe-based systems rather than allow their users to upgrade. Some Dell boards however are in fact rebranded Intel boards, in which case there might be a BIOS update for you on Intel's website. Google for a Dell users' forum, I'm sure there's one out there, they should be able to tell you what board is in there.

I did try to see which motherboard was in it by doing a quick google search, but I couldn't find anything.

Oh, there was one thing, one site listed the motherboard chipset as being "ATI Radeon X850XT" - but I don't think thats it ;)

Not likely, there are a couple of chipset out there that will support C2D, with a BIOS update, but they are very recent boards, i dont think that there has been enough time for a C2D supporting board to be made and sold by Dell, and then sold and recieved from Ebay

If you can tell me what the board or chipset is for def, ill see if i can confirm fo you

The chipset is a 945P. I can also tell you it was shipped on 19/07/2005 and it was shipped to germany with these specs if anyone speaks german...

Ok so guys, the last question is which CPU do I get for it to get the maximum power out of this dell? Ive been told the CPU's supported in the motherboard are:

Smithfield CPU's and Prescott CPU's. Basically I need to know

Which ones better?
Why is it better?
Which is more cost effective?
And what are the equivelants of these if I was buying AMD?

Thanks guys.
