My friend just dropped round his aging dimension 9150 at my house as he wanted to upgrade the primary hard drive as the other seemed to be on it's last legs. He didn't have the CDs so i went and downloaded a Dell version of Windows Media Center 05 OEM torrent, i assumed i could just use that.

Everytime it loads up and comes to the option of install windows, repair or quit it freezes, i've tired 5 or 6 times now and burned several discs and no luck. i have also tired using my Dell studio windows 7 disc but it also freezes. Any ideas?

i think its f11 or maybe f9 on a Dell to do a system restore.

If that doesn't work do the usual, memtest and hdtest to see if you have any faults.

as i said it's a new hard drive so doesn't have dell's backup partition. i've tried another hd and it does the same. i'll try memtest.

any other ideas?

Download the Dell 32-Bit Diagnostics (GUI Version A1284) from Dell's website and burn it to CD-ROM.

Start the PC and hit F12 as soon as it appears at top right of monitor. Load the CD-ROM and select boot from CD-ROM option. Run the extensive test. If the PC passes all tests, then the non-Dell OS you downloaded is likely incompatible and you need to get the original Dell OS disc.

And I'm not a Thug...
