Hi,

I have the option to buy a Dell E228WFP through work for a very reasonable price. Before I go ahead and say yes I have a few questions, hopefully you lot can answer them :)

- Is this monitor OK for editing photos?
- Does it support 720p? I will be using it with my XBox 360 via HDMI->DVI cable.

Thats it I think. If the monitor is not suitable for this can you reccomend any alternatives? I can get the 2208WFP, 248WFP and 2408WFP for reasonable prices too its just the E228WFP is at a very silly price :)

Cheers,

Craig

Depends if you are a photography pro or not and what kind of editing you are doing (pre-press, or displaying online).

It's a TN screen, so viewing angles vertically are not all that hot, plus it's only 6bpp (6 bits per pixel) so can only really produce 262,144 colours, faking 16.2 million by using smoke and mirrors.

If that's all acceptable to you then by all means go for it. If you're doing any pre-press work you'll want something that's 8bpp and possibly high-gamut (hence the 2408WFP which has a high-gamut S-PVA screen, also has better viewing angles), but bear in mind you'll need a colorimeter (at least £100.00 extra) to tame the overcooked colours out of the box.

The other problem becomes your want for gaming, in that case a TN panel is the better choice as it has lower lag and quicker refresh times.

So, to sum up:

Predominantly gaming, some light non-pro photo editing -> get the 228
Predominantly photo editing, perhaps pre-press -> 2408WFP (although you'd be better suited with a high gamut S-IPS screen)

Picked my E228WFP up last night. I haven't done anything meaningful on it yet, but i'm pretty pleased with it. Everything seems to be in order, and for sub £170 you can't argue. Viewing angles as suggested on this very forum and others aren't the greatest - but it's certainly not bad.

imo, no. its a 6bit dithered TN-Film panel and the colours are pretty muted. mine also had a distinct red tinge. its fine for desktop use but i found it just inadequate for photoshopping. this 24" DGM M-PVA panel i have now (which cost less than my e228wfp did:o) is in a different league entirely.

YYMV but i soon get fed up with the shortfalls.

in regards to the dells, the tn-panel isnt the reason for the lower input lag of the e228. its down to dells implementation of the signal processing. these dmg's have the lowest input ive ever seen on any flatscreen, typically around 2-3 times quicker than the 2407 and quicker than my old e228. the response time is also faster on this DGM screen.
