looking at replacing my desktop with a laptop and like the look of the Dells. What are the main diffs between these 2? I only want a 15ich screen really, but want nice screen quality and res, will use the laptop for net, itunes, occasional movies and a bit of downloading

Go to the dell website and look for yourself?

The inspiron is slightly lighter, but only has Intel gfx.

The Studio comes with ATI Radeon HD 3450 and better battery life.

Build quality? no idea.

Looks? up to you.

Not really, it's about time they stop offering XP, it's ridiculous getting a 7-8 year old OS for a brand new machine.

Your statement would be valid if MS had not screwed-up with Vista big time. Shoving it down peoples throat is not good.

These are Laptops are Santa Rosa based so proving drivers would be easy. Not only are they not providing drivers for these but they have been pressured by MS to remove XP drivers for legacy XPS Models like M1330 and M1530.

What have they screwed up? I've got Vista on two machines and it's been no less stable than XP. In terms of usability and features it's far better, not to mention the interface is far nicer.

Isn't the max res on the Inspiron/Studio 1200x800 at 15"? The Vostros go up to 1900x1200 if you're after a 'nice res' :)

Choices are:

15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display with TrueLife™ [Included in Price]

15.4" Widescreen WXGA+ WLED (1440x900) TFT Display with TrueLife™ [add £90.01 or £3/month1]

£90 is a lot but it is a WLED screen. £30 for a different colour though? catch a grip
Studio range is nice, but the Vostros are still better value. Ugly as they may be.

If only Dell's prices didn't fluctuate so much...

Yes I have and hated it. Ran like a Dog, didnt like the Interface, crap drivers( Creative driver only ran in MS wrapper ), had compatibility issues with older software.

haha, complaining about Vista because of a CREATIVE driver? Creative, who are one of the worst offenders for poor driver support... It's hardly the operating systems fault that companies are too lazy/sloppy to do some work and get drivers out.
How old was said software? What hardware were you running Vista on? How long ago was it?

Even the original release of Vista wasn't that bad, although you really needed XP aswell for the stability and Nvidia's drivers were insanely awful.

Now that there's been plenty of updates and more time for better drivers it's a great OS, any hardware from the last 2 years (assuming at least 1gig memory) will run Vista nicely.

Edit: As for that youtube video... It means nothing.

:| It doesn't actually mean anything... If you think that a single 17 second youtube video with Bill Gates not really saying much justifies your claims, then there's not much I can do.

I'm sure there are plenty of interviews with Bill Gates harking on about how great Vista is... At the end of the day though, they also mean nothing.

I'd also like to know how Bill Gates is "the horse", he's not been 'the man' for a while now?

On a fairly low-spec machine, yes. 1GB of RAM really isn't enough to run Vista smoothly and it's a shame that OEMs still ship PCs and notebooks with Home Premium and only 1GB of RAM, because it struggles.

If their test machine had been of a more appropriate spec for Vista, the difference wouldn't be so apparent.

And to echo the above, that Youtube video is completely meaningless. It doesn't refer to anything.

Ive tried Vista since Beta on various PC's even a well speced C2D rig but couldnt get on with it.

But ultimately you guys are right. Its here and its here to stay. I'll have to get grips with it because eventally Corporates will have swith to it.

Must admit I havent tried SP1 yet so I might give it another shot sometime.
