I'm getting a disk read error on a Dell Inspiron 6000.

The machine boots:
Loading PBR2... done
A disk read error has occurred
Ctrl+alt+del

I've tried the following:
Boot from XP CD - repair - fixboot - unsuccessful (despite bootsector being written successfully)
Boot from XP CD - repair - fixmbr - unsuccessful (despite master boot record being written successfully)

Removed 2.5" IDE and installed in an external enclosure. With the disk connected via USB Windows reports the following error when trying to access drive: "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".

What are my options for retrieving the data?
Does you think the disk is physically defective?

Thanks in advance!
