My mates just bought a dell 5190 (or something like that) 1gig ram.. intel 2.8 Dual core chip. onboard graphics card. It has a PCI-E slot and hes looking to get a card for it. What would be the best solution for him? (not over kill, something he could get the best out of his GC and CPU.

Usual

not so much a price issue. More of a what will be best for full potential of the CPU. The boy is loaded but he wont be spending £600 on a SLI or anything silly like that. Did suggest the X1800 XT 256 mb @£170 but after reading some reviews of the 2.8d it looks like this card would be held back by the CPU? not sure really

easyrider might be right, 7600GTs are fantastic for the money

Edit: if hes loaded whys he using a dell?!

His PSU will only be 305v with one spare molex unless its got 2 optical drives then there won't be any, my nephews got one. So you want something single slot (btx gfx card fan on top) without additional power lead ideally. I think the 7600gt would probably be my choise.

If he's loaded, just get the best GPU u can. As some new games arent cpu limited (oblivion), and you can always just bump up the res/aa etc, even if your cpu is lacking.

256Mb X1800XT is a steal.

Agreed, if he can get the X1800XT 256MB, thats the one to get imo.

It won't fit they are Btx cases, instead of the hsf being under the card they are on top with no backplate space for the top backplate you'd have to cut it down to a single profile and he'd probably nead more than his 305V PSU to run it too
If its a 9100 then they would fit and its got a higher volt PSU as well ;)

hmmm, a lot of the dell machines we recieve at work for gpu upgrades, are not up to the task, nearly always because of the power supply... low watts and not to great rails... not only that but a lot of them use a unique type of PSU fitting, so sometimes a psu upgrade is out of the question...

the other day though we did fit a new PSU & X800GTO2 in a new BTX dell machine(was a dimension cant remember which one though...)

dell man, thats the problem, dell make rubbish machines, my mate spent far too much money on dell machine (he was told at PC shop that pentium 4s are VASTLY superior to AMDs) he bought the system and it had no PCI-express and no AGP slots, don't ever get dell if you have any sense

Hes bought a dell as it was a good deal (no extras just a newpaper deal) and it meets his requirements fine. another friend bought the same deal - £399 p4 2.8 d 512 ram 19"tft 80gig harddisk etc.. and went and got a X800 from OCUK on a deal for today for £64. Works a treat. Fine for what he wants. £460 in total for a average games PC with a 19" TFT. In my book thats a bargin. Do you think the X1800 wont fit then? or requires too much power? maybe a move to nVidia as they use less power and smaller fan/heatsink???

Its a dell 5150. btw

Its not because ATI use more power its becasue the PSU in the dell wont be powerfull enough for a high end gfx card. A 7600GT for example does not need an external power connector as it can be powered by the pci-e lane (max 75watts). If money isnt an issue then I would recomend getting this card.

King.
