Dell issues

ive got a standard dell monitor, which keeps going off, that is if you turn the thing on, it will then go off, if you move the mouse, it will come on for a couple of seconds then go off, its definately the monitor and not the computer (changed the monitor)
any ideas

How old is it? If still in warranty just send it back to them to puzzle over.

Otherwise, it could be one of a few things. Power supply, inverter or backlights.

What model is it? CRT or LCD?

Have a look at how many pins are in the VGA cable, maybe missing important one?

its lcd and has been working fine for years in the same configuration
