Im going to take it apart later, but my dell d820 laptop died this morning, It turns on, but I get no output to the screen at all. Typical as the 3yr warranty ran out last month!!
Im suspecting that it could be the system board as everything is integrated on one board, which leads to my main question - Apart from Dell, who are usually hideously expensive, where else can I get dell laptop motherboards from?

Does anyone know of a good online supplier for dell parts?

Ta

I would defo check through every possible problem before blameing the mobo and getting shot , try takeing just about everything out , hdd , ram ,dvd etc .. then boot ..

also .. when its on trying moving the screen .. like you were going to close it if that makes sense? .. it may be a dodgy contact for power/signal ..

I have taken it completely apart and reconnected everything after cleaning it all and it powers on, but not much else, so Im still thinking its the board?

Test it on an external monitor. This will rule out the screen. If it is the screen it should cost around £125 - £150 to have it repalced (depending on size).

Deffo not the monitor - no output to external screen..

When I turn it on, I get a power LED, the bluetooth LED, the HDD LED flickers breifly and the fans start up, and then nothing - it sits not doing anything - I have comepletely taken it apart, cleaned everyhting and put it back together, no differnece, so Im suspecting either the onboard GPU or the mobo. It might be dodgy RAM, but Im going to swap that out today at work just to find out one way or another..

use a heat gun on the motherboard it may work again, thats what i had to do to my laptop as mined didnt want to boot at all and i used a heat gun because i didnt want to pay £100+ for a new or used motherboard.

OK - an update
Cant get the thing to work, though thanks for the suggestions - so I got work to order me a new laptop which arrived yesterday - its a HP Pavilion DV6-2060ea
Core i7, 4GB RAM, 500Gb HDD - its not too shabby.
First things first - take laptop out, fire it up, everything works, but the amount of ***p that is installed has me itching to wipe the machine and start again with a proper version of Win 7.
Go to the HP website - can't find my laptop at all
Fire off a mail to their support guys and get the following

Thank you for contacting HP Customer Care.

The drivers can be downloaded from internet. If you are unable to find any of the drivers then do let us know. We will search them for you.

If you have any concerns, queries or issue persists then please feel free to mail me back and I would be glad to assist you.

Had to laugh, I dont think I will complain about Dell again!!
Im sure that I can find the drivers and most of them are probably native in Win 7, but should I really have to spend time looking for them?

In the meantime, I will see if I can hunt down a mobo on the bay to fix my old dell - I can see some, but around the £200 mark

That's quite unlike HP, but still pretty ridiculous. If they're willing to search for them for you, they may as well put them on their support site!

Anyway, I have a Dell D820 and had it do something similar when I upgraded the RAM. When I first turned it on, it did the same as yours; all the lights come on but no OS loads and there's nothing on the screen. I thought I had broken it somehow. I left it turned on while I scoured the web for information, and after something like 10 or 15 minutes, the laptop beeped and informed me that the hardware configuration had changed, and asked if I wanted to save the new settings or enter the BIOS. Before you buy a new motherboard, it may be worth leaving it turned on for a bit to see if the same thing has happened to yours.

Cheers for the heads up, but I have left it on overnight with no difference. Its a heat issue I think, as this is the 2nd mobo I have gone through on this model. The last time it went, about 18 months ago, the Dell engineer claimed that they were replacing a lot of the mobo's due to the cooling being very poor with this laptop. I can believe that just by how hot it is when Im using it..
Crunching seti on the first mobo probably didn't help much , but Ive been a good boy with the relacement and steered well clear..

I figured it was worth letting you know just in case you hadn't tried it. You are right about the laptop putting out a lot of heat though, I upgraded mine from a T2300 to a T5600 so mine runs even hotter than standard. If you do get a new motherboard for it, it might be worth getting either a laptop cooler or one of the Dell PR01X docking stations to help with the airflow underneath the laptop.

On the plus side, that HP is a huge step up in terms of CPU and RAM over the D820. I assume it'll have 3Gbit/s SATA rather than the D820's 1.5Gbit/s, which makes an SSD a worthy upgrade. Good luck if you do decide to get a new board for the D820 :)

If you've had the motherboard replaced once, I would suggest you phone Dell and explain that it's already been fixed under warranty but it has died again. They may offer to repair it again for you.

Tried that, but they are sticking to it being out of warranty now (by a month) - s'pose they are trying to save money, just like everyone else, so cant complain..

As for the new lappy - its OK so far - like seeing 8 CPU's displayed (due to the hyperthreading)
