on the first of this month I ordered a Dell Inspiron 1721 with AMD Turion 64x2 TL-60... due to be here tomorrow, the 21st. However... they have emailed me to notify me that it will be delayed to the 26th of Febuary!

Since contacting me I have noticed Dell have removed the Inspiron 1521 range from their website, but not the 1721 range. Rumour has it that its because Dell have ended their contract with AMD and will no longer produce the 1521 and 1721 machines. But the 1721 is still available.

Does anybody know what is happening?

Temptation to change my order to a different model is setting in!

was such a good deal though!

£160 off and free delivery which is an extra £60!

I think its purely a back log problem which they disguise as "preproduction" parts ordering. Some laptops on dells page say there will be delays with delivery as I have just been browsing now.

Suppose I will just have to wait. :(

And push comes to shove I can contact them and try and milk them for some upgrades! :D

Found the reason for the delays.

The screen options are from the choice of 3: -

1. 17.0" Widescreen WXGA+ (1440x900) TFT Display
2. 17.0" Widescreen WXGA+ (1440x900) TFT with Truelife
3. 17.0" UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WUXGA (1920x1200) TFT Display with TrueLife

Majority of laptops up to new year were sold with the second option. They use LCD's to back light the screen as these are lighter and brighter!

As it happens Dell are having a hard time getting a large enough quantity of these screens to fulfil requirements.

The other problem is Dells quality control are not happy with the level of finish on the coloured tops now available on the models.

According to Dell production levels are staring to pick up and their shipments should be back on track soon!

The confusion lies with the discontinuation of the 1521 model and the continuence of the 1721. But after all this is Dell... so who knows !
