I went on the Crucial website and it recommended 2x 4GB DIMMs 1333 but...

CPUID tells me that my laptop can support a DIMM size of 8GB and a frequency of 1600.

Does anyone have any experience of what RAM Dell laptops tolerate?

We need to know the exact model of the laptop before saying anything conclusively.

You can put in ram of any frequency, so long as it supports the ram type. If it doesn't support a higher speed, it will downclock to the maximum frequency it can support.

I am aware that higher frequency RAM would just underclock, but there's no need to waste money on a spec I can't use, it's more the capacity that I'm curious about.

There are conflicting online reports with some claiming that they had a laptop and had no trouble upgrading to 16GB others saying 8GB max. Hmmm....
