Dell M1530 Touchpad

My touchpad has stopped working properly on my laptop, sometimes it seems to work briefly but for the most part I'm having to use a mouse.

Any suggestions as to what I can do before I buy a replacement touchpad/rest? Could it be something as simple as a loose cable?

I usually test them in something like ubuntu to eliminate software if its the same you're looking at hardware issues , sometimes reseating the touchpad cable can fix it.
