Hope this is the right forum for this query if not "mods" please move.

The Sata hard drive on the PC has gone and my mate gave me a IDE HD however when I set this HD up as Primary and CD Rom as Secondary and booted the pc up the bios stopped with the usual message of Press F1 F2 to enter set up ....

However the problem I have is that no matter how I try to configure the HD it is not recognised by the BIOS - Is their something I need to do. I "assume" that motherboard does support either or? Do I need to flash the bios with some update or is their another way round this, can it even be done??

On a lot of Dell machines, you have to explicitly enable/disable drives in the BIOS. For example, if you are no longer using a SATA hard drive, you'll need to flip the SATA port to disabled. Same with IDE iirc
