Anyone know of a way to control the fan speeds on a 2950 without having to hack the BMC firmware? It seems to range from loud to OMFG loud.

No kidding :p

It's in the loft at the moment but will go in a rack in the garage eventually. I upgraded the BMC firmware to the latest version which took nearly 10 minutes, during which time all the fans were going at full speed. I had to leave the house, it was ridiculous!

Fair enough but they are designed to sit in server rooms where people are not, our HP DL's on a cold boot sound like they could suck your insides out

At work we've got a gen 2 and gen 3 2950 and the gen 3 is quieter, but still loud, wouldn't like to have it at home, but the r710 is much much quieter by comparison, I don't mind having it on at home when testing things out, but it's still loudish, more a constant drone.

Without hacking the firmware I don't think there's a way to slow them down, I know if 1 fan fails the rest goto full speed to make up the airflow.
