Hi all,
I recently acquired a used T3600 desktop. In great condition but sadly missing one major component; the PSU. Now, I have a spare Corsair CX750 unit with all the standard connectors on it, can this be made to work? Or am I right in thinking that the T3600 has a non standard 24 pin connector on the motherboard? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated since I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to Dell!
Thanks, Dave

Got 3 of these in my office (T3610s) - I'll pop one open for you and see what it uses. I have a feeling it'll be a proprietary Dell PSU.

Thanks for a quick reply, that would be great. I don't actually pick the machine up for another week so can't get inside to look myself. Appreciate the help buddy!

OK, it looks like the T3610 has a standard 24-pin and 8-pin CPU cable. The PSU is not the normal shape though, so the CX750 wouldn't fit in the case but it should work. Do you know what spec the system is? The Precision T3600 series are decent workstation-class machines. Our 3 are all 3D CAD systems running a Xeon, 32GB RAM and a Quadro graphics card.

That's good news if it will at least power it up. I'll worry about squeezing it inside on another day. The particular one I'm picking up is running 16GB RAM, 3.3GHz Xeon but unfortunately only the baby 512MB AMD FirePro but it does come with two 250Gb SSD's so not too shabby for the price.

Yeah, I'm aware it's a specialised quick-release PSU, but shouldn't it still work if you take out all of Dell's cables? With the machine open, all the device cables appear to be standard. As long as things like the front panel are wired to the motherboard and not into a funny distribution board, then there shouldn't be any harm in the OP trying to plug in a normal PSU should there? Of course it's very likely that Dell have designed the power cabling arrangement so that you can only use their PSU... it wouldn't be the first time.

if you have a part number, i may have one of those in my massive mountain of server bits.

According to what I've discovered, the OP's T3600 originally came with either a 425W or 635W PSU. The 635W module has the Dell part number 1K45H - this part number was quoted by a Dell rep on the Dell forums.

Sorry haven't been in my own thread much but work has been a busy one today! I spoke to the guy I'm buying it off and apparently it had the 425W unit but died on him and never got around to replacing it. I've managed to arrange things so I can pick it up tonight instead. Once I get it home will open it up and report back. I'm still hoping that I can just open her up and plug everything in but from what I been reading it's looking like that might not be the case with this Dell.

Bit of an update, picked up the machine late last night and had a fiddle today. On first glance it looks like the connector side of things is compatible (8 pin CPU & 24 pin ATX) Unfortunately after closer inspection there seems to be slight differences between the two 24 pin plugs (see pics below)

Note the different colour cabling and different number/configuration of unused pins between both the connectors (ATX on the left, Dell on the right) Apart from these subtle differences they seem identical and it plugs into the Dell motherboard fine. Since it was a used PC and not a great deal of money, I took the chance and plugged it in to try and start it anyway. Nothing, not even any error lights on the front so I'm guessing it's a completely different pin layout to the standard ATX. I've tried looking for a pinout diagram for the Dell connector but so far no luck.

Unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that it won't work with a regular PSU. It was worth a try though! Providing there is nothing wrong with the rest of the system you're going to need to try to track down a PSU for that machine. The T3600 originally came with 2 options - 425W or 635W. Either will work. The 635W unit has the Dell part number 1K45H - can't seem to find the part number for the 425W model at the moment as it seems there are a number of Dell 425W PSUs for their workstation line.

Thanks for the help guys. That's the lead in the first pic which is separate from the Dell PSU and plugs into a connection board inside the case. The Dell PSU slides into that metal enclosure and connects directly to the connection board. From there, the cables go to the motherboard as usual. I basically have all the bits apart from the actual PSU itself. Hope that kinda makes sense, I probably haven't explained it too well.
