i have a mates dell optiplex gx260 which has just stopped working.

Im guessing its either the PSU or the motherboard that has died.

i dont have another PSU but was wondering if another psu would fit into a dell or are they dell only fittings for psu's ?

is there a way to see if it is the PSU?

thanks in advance.

Be careful because some Dell PSU's are wired slightly differently. Google it and you'll see such examples.

thanks. no not in warranty .

i think i found a replacement psu on fleebay , only thing is that im not sure that it is the psu.

would hate to buy a new one only to find out that it is the motherboard that is faulty.....

Be careful with Dell's of about that age some have a v v annoying feature as can be seen (just) in the image below.

Rather than having the traditional full sized square PSU hole on the backplate of the case they have only a tiny cutout for the power connector which means unless you fancy whipping out the dremmel 99% of PSUs wont fit due to variation in connector location or most annoying of all anything with a switch wont fit.
Really your only option is to get an old or reconditioned unit but it is a real pain paying the prices these sell for especially when you hold the paper light PSU in your hand and realise what the money could have bought you PSU wise new.
One major plus is this trend was short lived and they do not do this on any of the modern Dells I have seen.

I am assuming it is a minitower case here the smaller form factor models use v specific elongated PSUs.
