Dell R310: Fan Noise when using unknown PCIe cards?

Hello,

Another random question on the use of used servers if I may.

My experiment with an old Dell PE2950(III) went well in getting it capable of running quietly, but alas as expected (and told many times by caged), the power draw is horrific due to the age of the machines.

My trusty Dell R410 is quite a good little machine once I had removed the Perc 6/I from it, the fans quietened down. Now I really like the Dell units, they're simple, good IPMI through the iDRAC and they actually look good with the faceplate attached.

My question refers to the Dell R310 and the use of unknown PCIe cards. The cards are DVB-S2 satellite cards and are for all intents not normal for this sort of situation. I know that the HP DL1xx G6s go nuts when an unknown card is installed but how do these dells operate?

Dell say that the at idle (for most of what this server will do) is about the noise of a quiet library, but I was hoping to gauge users views of them and actually see if they are as quiet as they suggest. The server will be rackmounted away under the house where the temp is generally max 20 degrees in summer and 10 degrees in winter with low humidity, so noise isn't such a problem if it operates at 50-55 dba but obviously at 70 - 80 (DL180G6 apparently with unknown cards installed) it would be.

Any information and general pointers would be grand.

Cheers,

Chris

I've never known Dell stuff to go crazy when you put a non-Dell PCIe card in. I had an old FC card in a 520 a few months back and it didn't make a difference.

Cheers Caged, that appears to be the general response I'm getting, although a Dell employee has confirmed that on the latest gen any unknown card will spin the fans up to full speed by design.
