Hi,

thinking of purchasing the Dell Ultrasharp 2709W monitor. It says it has a resolution of 1920x1080

So does that mean it cannot display 2560x1440 or 2560x1600??

I had a 27" imac and that had a resolution of 2560x1440 , so the dell would be less quality if it couldnt display that resolution surely?

With LCD monitors the maximum resolution is just that, the most pixels the panel can reproduce. You will find that windows will not even give you the option to increase the resolution above 1920x1080.

Less pixels doesn't always mean a lower quality (take a look at the 2209WA for an example), but I think you'll find that the 27" imac is the only monitor below 30" that has a 2560*xxxx resolution. If you need a resolution above 1920*1200, you'll need a 30" monitor (which will give you 2560*1600).

The Dell 2709w has a maximum resolution of 1920*1200 (16:10) and is a pva screen.
It does support 1920*1080(16:9).

The mac screen is newer and has a higher resolution(16:9) and is an IPS screen.

You can get 2560*xxxx only with the mac screen or 30" displays as mentioned before.

SO putting the 27" imac and the 27" dell screen side by side , the imac would look far better and sharper?

The imac one will look sharper due to its higher res.

The colours/ image quality will depend on your preference since the dell screen is pva (produces better images in dark scenes/shadows etc) where as the imac screen is ips and produces more vibrant colours.

NEC are going to be releasing a 27" screen with the same resolution IPS panel next year and I've read Dell are releasing a new 27" monitor (no other info. I'm afraid). No news on prices either, but if you can wait then it may be to your advantage.
