I've had some equipment stolen, including a Dell laptop bought from OcUK. OcUK say they don't hold the serial numbers of items sold, I'm looking for the paperwork at the moment (it's being elusive) but will Dell have a record of this machine serial number somewhere?

No, OCUK buy 10's or 100's of machines and then they sell to you so dell could tell you 100's of serial numbers but they wouldnt know which one was yours unless you registered with them online (and then only maybe).

Dells usually ship with the number on the hardware (great if its stolen), and in the CD pack you get with it, containing the windows reinstallation disk.

whos you isp? as it its a cable modem isp. some of them do log mac address of network cards, I dont know the full in a out of it, but when I was on NTL (long time ago), they used to log mac address of NIC so that I can't just plug into to another machine without calling them first. MAC address are unique so depending on what you want it for...

I registered a stolen (lost :D ) PDA with its wifi mac address; my router as mac filtering it was stored on that. a few days latter the cop shop called, I went down and show them how to get the mac address  to prove it was mine and got it back. :D
