Hi all,

I've had a bit of an issue with my Laptop. Long story short around 2 months ago my power button finally packed in after being very unresposnive for a while. I took it for repair, and after a couple of weeks the person in the store said he was unable to track the part down, and I'd have to go elsewhere or even send it back to Dell - he was kind enough to give me the part number.

Now, my intention was to send it back to Dell, presuming it'd take a while and knowing I'm going on holiday next week I thought I'd wait until today to call up, so I'd not miss my laptop.

So yeah, it's been on for just over 2 months...

However, sods law yesterday it completely overheated and I hadn't got round to backing my stuff up yet.

Basically, my issue is I'm out of warranty and I need the wire fixing, so Dell would probably be the best bet... But I've heard through friends that if I send it off to them (and tell them it overheated) they'll automatically replace the harddrive and I'll have to pay more and lose all my stuff (really against this).

I've had a google round etc. And I can't really find much online, so I hoped someone here could help me out a bit with this...

Should I just send it to Dell and not tell them about the overheating issue?

Is the overheating issue likely to be just from being on for so long or is there a potential it could have fried a motherboard or something serious?

Or are there any other places I can take it instore (I'm based in Birmingham) or send it to that can do it and not format my harddrive?

Thanks!

Just spoke to Dell and they want to charge £149.99 plus VAT to repair it.

That is almost half of the price I paid for the laptop. Can anyone recommend a decent Laptop repair company or am I best seeking an independant one?
