Worthing
I bought my girlfriend a a Dell Studio 1558 last year as a laptop for light gaming, however, it seems now that it wont detect the USB mouse I got for it when its plugged in, I assumed at first it was the USB ports, but after a bit of testing I found they work fine with USB drives and the like.
So I tried a second mouse and had exactly the same problem, when I booted the PC the mouse had no light from the sensor and did not work, I have tried a BIOS update but this didnt resolve anything, any ideas what might be causing ths?

Thanks!

I have a DELL Studio 1558. Have you checked the Symnatics Application? (spelt something like that). Go into settings and see what it's behaviour is set to. Mine disables the touchpad if I plug in an exterior mouse, yours may not be set to enable exterior mice.

Failing that, uninstall and reinstall the mouse driver application.

thanks for the suggestions, I did check device manager and there were no issues, when I plug the mouse in its not recognised by device manager at all, I have tried both mouses on my own PC and they both work fine, will check the synaptic driver settings when I get home!

I have a vague recollection of a USB mouse setting I once saw in a BIOS or some control panel somewhere. I assume you've been into the keyboard/mouse settings on the main windows control panel and told it to use the USB mouse instead of the integrated mouse?
