Well I received my Dell S2740L yesterday.
First of all the negatives:

  • The stand only adjusts tilt.
  • The screen is very reflective.
  • The USB ports are hard to access
  • small amount of condensation behind the glass, this cleared once being in a warm room overnight.
  • 27" isn't the massive wow factor over 24" I was expecting
  • No DVI cable with my screen only VGA?

Now the positives:

  • Stunning picture quality
  • Very accurate colours, photographs look like they have been printed
  • 1080p looks fine at 27"
  • No discernable lag
  • No ghosting
  • No dead pixels
  • Shiny screen looks truly amazing in a dimly lit room.
  • easy to clean

Overall, i'm pleased with it, games have never looked better, the reflection from the screen can be almost mirror like however.

Strangely Dell still sell systems with the VGA cable plugged in, happened with all the ones I've owned including the U3011. But surely there was a DVI cable in the box?

Very strange, they must be trying to reduce costs or something. All the Dell monitors I've had one cable for each connection the model had, be it DVI, VGA, DisplayPort, HDMI etc.

How are you finding the DPI on the screen?

I'm liking the resoultion, it looks fine even at 27" I am not saying that higher resoultion would not be better but the beauty with 1080p is you don't need an ultra powerful graphics card to run it.

The reflection however isn't great and should be considered before purchase.
I am sure there are anti-glare coatings available as its a solid glass front.

I got mine from elsewhere and contacted for a DVI to be sent as it was listed with one, they were fine with that and I got one, no idea if they updated the description.

My first one got replaced today with the Dell warranty as it had a dead pixel however I've just plugged in my new one, it looked fine until the top right of the screen has a smudgy fog behind it, is this some condensation?, I'm hoping it will go away with it being on for awhile, do not want to replace it again :o .

Yes, see my first post above.

Its condensation caused by the monitor being stored in a cool/cold location then being brought inside.
I will clear, but it will take a day or so.

What do you think of it?

I must admit my flabber was gasted when I found out there was no DVi cable.

I read mate I just wasn't sure as it's not something I've ever seen before, its moved so I believe it is condensation so hopefully will clear, bit worrying though.

Haven't had the screen for long but it looks really nice, it's reflective so wouldn't recommend for well lit rooms. Was worried about the 27" 1080p pixel debate but unless you have your face an inch off the screen you wont see them, not an issue at all, don't do desktop work so 1080p perfect for movies games.

Can't comment on colours, coming from TN to IPS it will obviously be better, but reading some monitor reviewers they say its accurate out the box. Happy so far :)

No DVI cable is a strange one, when you return a monitor for replacement with Dell they let you keep all the cables and only want the monitor and stand, even the power brick so it is not cost thing.

When the condensation clears it will be interesting to see if there are an streaks on the inside of the glass. A person on Hardforums returned 2 of his over this issue.

How did you get the first one replaced for a dead pixel as the monitor does not come with the premium panel guarantee ? I assume you returned it under DSR ?

SkodaMart : Is it ok in a dark room or a room with a small amount of lighting (e.g. bedside lamp). My plan would be to use it in a completely dark room, and have some bias lighting behind the screen. Purely for pc/console gaming and general pc stuff.

Hows the overshoot in games ?

Games look great. I am pleased with that side of it, no problems with response times.

You don't have to use it in a dark room, but sun glare and bright lights are a no no.

Anti-glare films are available and I could be tempted in the future.

Playing The Witcher 1 at night: OMG! graphics look amazing, that's the plus point of a shiny screen.

Excellent.

Here a fairly comprehensive review.

The guy talks about overshoot (inverse ghosting I guess) in gaming and even captures it. I have seen this on a few LCD TV's when doing very slow panning and it's very annoying.

I'm very close to ordering the Dell. I'd say 90% use will be for xbox 360 where I currently use a Samsung TN. No problems I can see with lag, overshoot or ghosting on the Samsung and while it has no edge bleeding or flashlighting in the corners like some LED screens I have seen, the screen isn't uniformly lit and looks sort of blotchy and of course the gamma shift and viewing angles are not great either. The Dell looks like it will be far superior in every respect except maybe response time compared to TN and the IPS glow doesnt bother me.

I can honestly say, I haven't noticed overshoot, he actually says its very hard to notice.

The reflection is bugging me though

The site I ordered from has a 3 year dell warranty on it, pixel perfect any defect. Can't name the site ummm, but it's the one TFTcentral linked to, same price too.

Condensation has gone, can't see any marks left, hopefully when it warms up nothing appears as this room gets very cold.

All new Dell monitors carry a 3 year warranty, you can deal direct with Dell and they collect it from your door and swap it over there and then.

Indeed. I have gone through the RMA process with them many times. My question was regarding the premium panel guarantee aka zero bright pixel policy which the studio series does not carry when bought directly from Dell unfortunately.

That is true yes, although they rarely question why you want to return it so I'm sure you could get it swapped out regardless. Dells support is excellent.

I've seen a few complaints about people receiving screens with slight scratches, and also how easy it is to scratch when cleaning the glass. Anyone experienced this ?

Also, as it's edge to edge glass, does the glass cover what looks like a thin gloss black bezel, like the imac. And is there any part of the screen or frame that is gloss black, which seems to be all the rage these days on LCD TV's. Gloss black = fingerprint smudges = scratches/swirl marks after cleaning no matter how careful you are.

very interested in this monitor for those that have it how is it for gaming etc? my current monitor shows ghosting on moving images objects and i can even see it in games im hoping if i buy this id have a better picture and wont see those types of issues?
