Hey guys, I've architected a new network setup at our local office here and i've had 10 GbE rated LC Terminated fibre connected from Workshop Comms Cabinet => Reception Comms cabinet => Server Room, with the 2 main Dell Poweredge 6248's configured with a stacking module in the Reception cabinet.

Now, I had specced out XFP Transceivers for these switches, and was guaranteed by my account manager and her technical team lead that these are to be fitted in the Combo ports at the front of the switches, while I voiced concern that I thought that these XFP Transceivers actually required the "10GbE Uplink Module for XFP Optical" which fits at the rear of the switches at the cost of around £300 per module in addition.

I was guaranteed by them both that that is just for expansion, yet here I am with the kit in my hands and the transceivers don't physically fit in the ports. Hah. It was pure gut instinct that told me they were wrong and that's all it could be due to the fact that there is sweet FA on their website about these products.

I had a pretty good working relationship with my Dell Acc Manager and her team, now I am honestly not best pleased as now I have to explain why an additional £1200 will have to go through CapEx to get this working. Thank god I had the foresight to get a few cat6 ties cabled in as a backup plan.

Morale of the story - don't trust Dell's techy teams, Ever!!

I dont use Dell but it looks like you have the 1Gb sfp type modules that are used in the 4 front uplink ports. If it is anything like Cisco then 10Gb modules are about 4 times the size to cope with the optics.
I would go back to Dell and demand significant cost savings on the 10Gb modules.

I would be inclined to find out who their manager is and refer this up to them, I've only had to do this once, but it got things sorted out and I havent had a problem since.

Good luck with those, one of our SAN suppliers gave us a pair of Dell switches with 10Gbit uplinks, insisting they were the only supported model. Two months of intermittent errors later they finally admitted they didn't work and I swapped them for Cisco's and flawless performance.
