First impressions are certainly good! Upon unboxing the monitor it is clear that true to form, DELL have produced another high quality and beautifully finished product.
The U2412M is slightly easier on the eyes than the U2410 with curved corners and base finished in a subtle matt black. The stand is able to height adjust, twist and rotate just as the U2410 does and suits the monitor superbly.
Looking at an "out of the box experience" and hooking the monitor up was straight forward as it expected with a monitor, the ports on the rear are easily accessable and well thought out. My only gripe I could see was the inclusion of a display port aimed more at professionals with apple MACs etc rather than an HDMI which could put you off purchasing if you wish to run a Ps3 or 360 through it. There is however a VGA port so 1080P console gaming isnt completely ruled out if you have the adaptor cables required.
The U2412M is LED back lit unlike the more expensive U2410 which uses more natural cathodes. Not only is this a little bit of a let down but the fact the panel is only E-IPS rather than S-IPS of the U2410 also could be seen as a negatve. As a result the colours are a little on the cold side and the palet isnt as robust as that of the U2410. HOWEVER dont let this put you off!! With a few adjusments to the back light, the contrast and saturation etc on both the panel and in the VGA control centre soon sorted this leaving very little difference between the two. The U2412M still lacks that warmth that is produced by the U2410 but for a saving of over £160inc VAT it is certainly worth the compromise.
Final thoughts...
This monitor betters the U2311H in every way offering 1920x1200 pixels rather than just 1920x1080 which feels much better to look at as a result. Its not quite on par with the U2410 but as it is over a third cheaper you really cannot grumble.
Is there anything else at around the £300 mark worth looking at? Not really no... 3D monitors just dont cut it for image/video editing work and unless you insist on playing games in 3D there really is no other alternative for value for money making the U2412M an absolute bargain!
