Hi,
Looking at getting a new monitor, mainly for gaming, some web design and some light Photoshop work.

What is the Dell U2412M like for gaming?
Is there any noticable ghosting in fast paced FPS games, as they'll be the main games.

I've read mixed reviews about it being great for gaming and others saying it's not very good for gaming.
It would be good to hear from some of you guys who have it and use it for gaming quite a bit.

The cheap price, IPS display, made by Dell and multitude of inputs make it appealing.

Thanks.

I have the 23" version - it's fine for gaming. The U2412M does not have a multitude of inputs though, it has a very limited range of inputs - just Displayport, VGA and DVI.

Also, this scren here has very low input lag so depending on what type of gaming you are doing this might be an advantage to you. Obviously internet connection may be more of an issue here, but my screen has about 44ms input lag, so it rules out competitive FPS gaming.

The 2412 is a great screen and gaming I have not noticed any lag or ghosting. The downside for gaming is the 1200 16x10 res. Some games like starcraft will zoom the screen to fill the extra pixel height so you actually see less. Some games allow you to play with black bars top and bottom and run the screen in a 1080p config but not all and it's surprising how many just zoom the 16x9 image to fit regardless.

I now have an LG 1080p screen I use for gaming and I have a 2412 I use for my general browsing but tbh I will more than likley sell the 2412 and stick with a single 16x9 screen.

Hmm, I have a 16:10 screen and didn't SC2 stretches to fill the screen, as the resolution is set to 1920 x 1200, will have to check again... 16:9 is easier to manufacturer this is the main reason that it is being pushed as the "better" view, I personally prefer the extra height for doing most tasks! I don't think there are that many games that just stretch the resolution? It isn't really that tricky for a game to render the extra 120 x 1920 pixels? Most games allow you to set the resolution manually and 16:9 might be the "best" for films etc but I am not sure why that should be the case for games too.

i'm running dual 2412, playing Guild Wars 2, Battlefield 3, Max Payne 3.

no complaints whatsoever. i like 16:10 way more than 16:9

It is a shame that people are buying so much into the 16:9 ratio. For films I guess it is great but most of these are even wider than 16:9 in their native format. For working/typing/office/programming, the loss of vertical space is bad for productivity and the extra widescreen space isn't usually that useful.

As far as gaming goes, that monitor is fantastic. The three basic things you want from a gaming monitor are low input lag, low response time and minimal ghosting. The input lag on the U24 is 0.6 seconds, which is the lowest I've ever seen (and that's not based on what Dell says, that's based on testing). The response time of 8ms (G2G) is also excellent. You will see plenty of monitors that boast 2ms or 5ms, but that rarely stands up to testing. There is a lot of promotional ******** to do with monitors. Lastly, the ghosting on the U24 is also quite minimal, although there are some more expensive monitors that perform better in that regard.

Regarding the 16:10 thing, I'm currently using a 16:10 monitor and I purposefully went for a 16:9 monitor when I bought a new one yesterday (I went for the U23). The reason why is because I find that most games are made with 16:9 in mind, and will be optimised to that aspect ratio. E.g. I find the minimap to be far too small at 1200p in BF3, but just right at 1080p.

Besides that, 1200p will put an extra burden on your GPU with little to no additional benefit (IMO).

I think if all you do is game then 16:9 will be great and was on reason I had considered it as my 2nd screen (because of the amazingly low input lag). However for any other tasks that lack of space is quite a hit, the extra load on the GPU shouldn't be an issue at all. Besides surely better to have a larger screen than smaller if you have the choice.

Can always set the aspect ratio to scale properly and then you can game at the 16:9 ratio on a 16:10 monitor, but you have the extra space available when you are doing other things. Different games handle the FOV differently, console ports which is a lot of games these days unfortunately are optimised for 16:9, but that shouldn't stop you from getting something larger.

Afterall, if you wanted to do a 3 screen setup it would be better with 16:10 ratio then 16:9 overall. Of course 16:9 is usually cheaper, so always a trade off. I have 16:9 and 16:10 and prefer 16:10 for the extra vertical space, and haven't really found it an issue gaming.
