I was looking to replace my TN monitor for an IPS one, so I went with the recommended Dell U2414H, but I can't say I liked it.

It looked like there was a white sheet in front of everything with 90% transparency, which actually resulted in worst colours than the TN.

Is this typical of IPS or is this because of the coating?

Below is roughly what it looked like, with the bottom being the Dell IPS.

Brightness turned up too high? Have you calibrated it? (or just fiddled with the settings)

Yeah I play around a lot with the settings, I ended up using the profile supplied by ftfcentral, but regardless of the brightness, it still have that whitish colour.

How have you connected it up and what GPU are you using? Make sure you're using a Full Range RGB signal as detailed in my review of the monitor and article entitled: "Correcting HDMI Colour on Nvidia and AMD GPUs". The way you've described this with your picture sounds exactly like this is the issue - great illustration BTW. :)

your screen isn't calibrated correctly, too bright most likely and maybe slightly low on contrast. My calibration tool tells me to set brightness to 50% (using screen buttons not in OS) when it's 'tuning' the settings so I'd try this first.

There will always be a subtle glow with IPS but it's hardly noticeable on my screen.

Tried that already.

I wasn't able to resolve it no matter how bright or not I set it.

But what I'm guessing you're all saying is that this is not a typical IPS issue?

I used IPS at work (U2312HM) and TN at home, but it's not something I've particularly noticed. Having said that I've never actually checked them side-by-side, but I've never thought of the IPS as looking 'washed out' (we do a lot of colour-sensitive work on them).

In fact, usually for the first 10-15 minutes or so after turning on my TN screen (BenQ XL2420T) the brightness seems higher than usual or slightly washed out. Not sure if it actually lowers after that or my eyes adjust, but then again the screen isn't exactly known for its image quality.

If you've done everything correctly in regards to setting it up and it is as white as that then in my opinion that's not typical of any IPS screen I've used.

Just as a side note/thought. Some games have their own in game settings etc which might be worth checking theres nothing dodgy in there. Correct/calibrated gamma/brightness/contrast etc can sometimes get 'taken over' by games :(
