Dell U2711's overheating

I set up my 2 27" U2711 monitors about 3 hours ago (got another 1, but no space till new desk arrives). I am sitting here and I can feel heat coming from them. I've just touched one and the screen is very hot.

Is this going to damage the screen?

I am running at 65Hz with a DVI cable into a 580.

I have a 2709W here (most likely uses the same type of backlight as they are both 27in ultrasharps with CCFL type backlighting) and it also gets pretty hot. However, these screens are designed for it - so long as there aren't any problems with the monitor then this isn't a problem on it's own.

May I ask what level the brightness of the U2711s is set to? Usually out-of-the-box they are far too bright (and hence kick off a load of heat due to the relatively inefficient backlight technology).

Are you able to get 2560x1440 running without issue at 65Hz?

I've not changed the brightness, but I will lower it a bit now. It wasn't a problem, but if it takes a bit of heat off the monitors then I will.

Also I am running at 2560x1440 fine. What issues would I likely run into if I was to have problems?

Thanks

A few things:

- shutting itself down
- not turning back on
- pixel errors (pixels not going to the colour they should be)

If you have any of these issues, call up dell's technical support line, ask for the monitor department, tell them your issue and they should have a replacement monitor at your door the next working day (dell monitor warranty and general CS for monitors is great). That said, please don't worry - the monitors being warm does not mean any of the above things will happen - it is most likely a by-product of the backlight brightness being set very high out of the box (AFAIK these monitors have a peak power usage of ~111W).

Also, make sure you either keep all your original monitor boxes or make a note of the "Dell Works Order Number" which is written on a sticker on the side of your box. This number is absolutely required to make use of your warranty - get hold of it and keep it safe.

Yeah I remember the guy at OcUK saying flatpack the box and store it. I've got them in the atic.

Thanks for the response and info bud, much appreciated.
