Dell U2713HM Backlight Bleed?

Hi all, looking for some advice.

I recently listed my Dell U2713HM on the MM for sale (a quick username search should find it). Now, I got some questions about dead pixel and backlight bleed which I responded to, but it seems the picture I took showing the backlight bleed shows an excessive amount.

This seems to be affecting the prospects of selling the screen.

Now, my question is: Is this excessive bleed?

And if so, is there anything I can do about it? Are Dell likely to be interested? I've fired off an email but had no response yet.

The actual bleed comes as a bit of a shock as i've been absolutely thrilled with the screen's performance since I bought it.

Thanks in advance.

[Edit] This is the picture in question.

Looks like IPS glow (which is why I can never use IPS montiors, its ugly) + massive bleed as-well.
Surprised you used it at all and didn't send it back for a replacement.

Brightness and contrast set at 75.

I took the photo with an iPhone 6 Plus, how would I go about setting it up properly so that it gives an accurate picture? I know little to nothing about photography.

75% is far too bright! Should be around 20-35

Don't know about the iphone 6 but there should be an exposure setting somewhere in either the camera or gallery effects app.

These monitors are famous for bad backlight bleed in the corner where the USB ports are.

There is a big thread about this screen on this sub forum somewhere and I think people have even gone as far as take the monitor apart and modify the USB pcb a bit to put less pressure on the panel and that has helped.

Copyed from tftcentral Dell U2713HM review

This could be adjusted all the way down to a very low 19.5 cd/m2 through changes to the brightness control, giving you a massive 299.7 cd/m2 adjustment range. This should allow you a good control of the screens luminance for low ambient lighting conditions which is great news.
A setting of around 35 - 40% should return you a comfortable luminance of ~120 cd/m2.

Okay, so brightness to 35 and contrast left at 75, just away to see if I can take a decent picture.

[Edit] What's the best preset to use?

[Edit2] Have figured out how to change exposure, should I set it to minimum to take the picture?

Right, well i'll take a pic tonight with exposure on minimum and see what you all think. :)

Set the exposure to whatever setting that makes it look more like what it does in real life. The lowest exposure setting on my N5 made everything black.

It's naturally subjective but I think this is more like what I'm seeing:

[Edit] Idiot uploader seems to have spun it 180 degrees, but you get the gist.

Looks more like IPS glow to me. Perhaps a bit of bleed on the bottom two corners.

Either way, if that is what you really see with your own eyes, I personally wouldn't be happy.

Dell said that they won't replace for backlight bleed.

Hmm, I'm tempted to just keep it. Really it's a great screen - I certainly don't notice the bleed or glow to the point where it spoils the experience.

I suppose that is the point, does it cause you a problem in your every day use...? The challenge for you could be trying to illustrate how little it is noticeable as I remember seeing the photo you posted in your "for sale" thread and cringing. Cringing because I imagined that it did not look anywhere near as bad in use but the camera does have a knack of exaggerating how bad these IPS monitors can be.

I recently had two AOC 1440p delivered and both were returned due to Glow and Bleed...

...in normal lit conditions you could see large areas of glow and bleed with both of them.

The Benq that arrived was comparatively perfect...

....however I would not wish to take a photo of it for a problem which doesn't exist, then again I'm not selling it.!

I gave my Son my 29" 21:9 LG and I had taken some photos of that, as I was going to sell it, and I noticed the photos of that IPS screen were none too flattering.! But it was great in my use, which didn't involve watching the film mavity in a dark room- lol.!

Best of luck but I would show the photo above and also one or two showing the desktop and a game screen, I bet it will look fine then.

Just looks like a bit of IPS glow to me. Try moving your head around whilst looking at the screen if the glow moves around then it's IPS glow.

You get Glow with IPS screens it's unavoidable and part of the technology. I find it a lot better to live with than the washing out of TN screen when you look off angle at them. I have just gone back to my AOC 1440p over a ROG Swift as I found the TN screen horrid.

Your Dell looks ok to me in terms of bleed. I would be happy with that screen and I'm fussy. Photos always make it look worse than in person.

Then that is all that matters! :)

This 3rd 29" screen of mine is very good, there is only IPS glow at the top left, which is noticeable as soon as I view the screen from the right on a dark/black screen.

Where as with my previous two, you could notice the bleed and glow no matter what time of day it was even with the brightness set to 15%,

with lights on:

During the day (brightness was set higher for this in order for me to be able to make the screen out, iirc about 40%):

Thing is Nexus, I think that with regards to selling it two things are happening:

1. People are being put off by my first picture. I'd take it down but I don't want to get accused of "trying to hide" anything.

2. I've had a couple of very lowball offers, mainly centred around "OMG it's ruined" based on the above picture.

Not really sure where to go with it from here.

Do Dell not replace for excessive backlight bleed then?

Will have to keep my fingers crossed for my replacement refurb in the morning then, hope there is no bleed.

The one I am using is fine, but dead pixel, and a white mark on the panal.
