This looks pretty nice for anyone after a productivity focused display. I particularly appreciate that it's a full 4k display.

So you can watch even 16:9 4k content in native resolution if required. I also think that a 40" 21:9 display is pretty much the sweet spot in terms of size.

Shame it's only 60hz and lacks freesync/gsync. Also no HDR. In the old side lots of connectivity and usb-c support.

Nice!

Arguably the AW3821DW is better for 4K content and it does have all the extras. Course it's only 38" !

For me it's not so much the size difference but more that dropping to 38" (3840 x 1600) puts you just under 4k which has scaling implications for viewing 4K feeds. Disappointed that the 40" doesn't have some of the tech you'd expect from a £1000+ monitor like HDR, 144Hz+ or Freesync though.

It would be interesting to compare the two! You might be right that the Alienware AW3821DW is the better monitor overall though.

very different segments though. the 40" is about office work, productivity, general uses whereas the Alienware is all about gaming

True, but in an ideal world I'd like a monitor I could use for both! :D

How have you found the anti-glare coating on newer Dell/Alienware monitors as I had a couple of monitors (AW 2310 and Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP IIRC!) about 10 years ago but didn't really like them as I found the anti-glare coating too harsh to the point where I kept being distracted by the speckles of the AG film when trying to read text on them?

I have a Samsung 34" ultrawide at the moment which I much prefer as it has more of a lighter semi-glossy type of coating (if that's the correct term!).

Is there still that kind of difference between the two these days? I was contemplating upgrading but don't want another montitor with a heavy anti-glare coating like my old Dell Ultrasharp /Alienware models.

How can the AW3821DW be better for 4K content when it resolution is lower then 4K so it can't even display a 4K resolution

If the 38" (1600p) is the same as my 35" (1440p) then you can not get things like netflix to play in 4k or game consoles where this 40" having 2,160 should

This the main down side i find with my 35" UW you can't display 4K from game consoles, 4k Blu-ray players, 4K Netflix, 4K apple TV, Firesticks etc

Films! Many 4K films are 21:9 so on a 4k TV would display with black bands on the top and bottom of the screen. Not so on the AW3821DW which will display the full 3840 width with no top and bottom black bands.

It doesn't work like that your monitor needs to be 4k it needs a 2160 vertical resolution

Like in these pictures below i took where the movie says it Ultra HD 4K on my 4k OLED but it will not play at 4k on the monitor in the picture below it because the monitor not 4k

You sure? I have a 3840x1600 monitor, and it sure does work for me.

Can you post a picture showing this then please ?

As i also googled it and other people can't get netflix to run at 4K on there 38" UW or 34" UW
same with stuff like playstations & xboxes

For example NETFLIX/PRIME and QHD/QHD+ only HD 1080p even with UHD subscription : ultrawidemasterrace (reddit.com)

hi,

i don't get the point why my 38" 3840x1600 get only 1080p stream NETFLIX or AMAZON PRIME even with UHD subscription.EDGE browser is selected, 200mbps, RYZEN 3900x, lg38uc99 with 2080 super

is there a workaround to get better quality like 1440p or 1600p instead of those pixeling/bluring 1080p right now?

I could have even lived with the lower refresh and no HDR it if it had Freesync. I mostly require a largish 4K (or higher) monitor for content creation but having no VRR is pointless even for a casual gamer.

If you have no interest in games at all, is this about as good as monitors get for productivity?

I have zero interest in 49" monitors but do like the idea of native 4K resolution and USB-C support. Are there any competitors in this space?

EDIT: The LG 40WP95C is a competitor which features TB4 and 72Hz refresh rate, and the Lenovo P40w-20 has TB4 and a 75Hz refresh rate.

Surely 40 inch is far to big for a pc desk ?

I have a 80cm deep desk and even my 27inch monitor feels to big sometimes.

It’s a subjective thing. I have a 65cm deep desk and a 32” primary monitor. I recently moved my 55” TV onto the desk to sit beside it. I have often felt the 32” monitor is a little small, but do think the 55” TV is a bit too big.
