how much % tax do americans pay on their purchases? do they get as much as 17.5% slapped ontop like us?

0.0-11.5% depending on the state and item purchased. Dell US also charge $69 for next day delivery.

Monitors with a HDMI port are also liable for additional duty on top of VAT in the UK. The manufacturers pay the bill but as you can guess it gets passed on straight to us and you.

Too pricey I'm afraid, if it was 700 quid as in US I would perhaps be considering a purchase.

The US price isn't quite as low as it seems as there are only a couple of states than don't add any sales tax on plus Dell charge high amounts of shipping.

Once you add that, the additional duty and VAT on you're around the UK price. Nothing to do with Dell - blame the government.

I like the look of this but I'm afraid to say I don't £940 like it, and it's only £274.61 more to get a 3GHz C2D 4GB RAM 1TB HDD computer built into it..

But for £702.... Hmm odds of it in a padded suitcase surviving the baggage throwers?

As I said above though, the $1099 price point is completely irrelevant unless you live in one of the very few US States that charge no tax.

Even if you have a friend in the US that can order one on your behalf, you have 4 problems:

- A debit/credit card company will not give you the XE rate as they take their cut for exchanging the currency which would probably add on at least another £20-30 on such a high value item
- Additional duty charges are applicable due to the screen having a HDMI input
- Add 17.5% VAT on to the screen (inc. duty)
- Add delivery from the USA to the UK along with local couriers fees for all the Customs clearance.
