Hi

Im looking to get a laptop with an nvidia 8600gt or and ati hd2600.

I know about the Dell Vostro 1500 but resist getting it as I dont find it very exciting, and it appears to be quite ugly and heavy.

My other choices are

- The acer aspire 5920g (The 8600gt version) £750 - bit expensive though.

- The mesh GX 610 (£700 with hd2600)

(this looks great - why cant I find any reviews about it anywhere)

All are about the same spec and Id rather get one of the latter two, but I will be working in a conservatory with sunlight right behind me which I assume, from my short experience with reflective screens, will be unuseable - which leaves the Dell (with the regular matt screen) the only option as it is the only gaming laptop in this price range that gives you the choice of a matt screen

Though Ive read that the the Dell high-contrast 'True-life' screen is also anti-reflective which is really confusing???

Am I right in thinking this. Is there anyone with experience with the new hi-contrast (but reflective) screens that can give me some advice

Thanks

Masten

The 1900x1200 tru-life screen on the Vostro 1700 is superb. Colours are fantastic and the text is very crisp. Using it to type this. It looks glossy when not in use, but not when turned on. Recommended.

Hi there, and thanks for your replies,

The only glossy screen Ive used are on low end hp laptops and when there's either sunlight or interior lights behind you the reflections are really distracting, and I also find the screens washed out even compared to a bog-standard cheapo tft I've got.

But with the dell tru-life are you saying there are no reflections.

isnt the text tiny thou? i have a 22" at 1680x1050 so I cant imagine 1900x1200 on a 17" (i got the 1700 with a 1440x900) maybe you could post a pic of it

any chance of a photo? cant really tell how itd look on mine. im returning this display anyway, its bloody awful, poor viewing angle (top/bottom of screen diff colour!) and extreme backlight bleed. ive heard dell use LG/auo and philips, and some auo's are pretty bloody awful. be warned if your ordering a dell 1500 or 1700 with WUXG+.
