How important is it to have the exact part code when replacing a broken screen? Surely a Inspiron or a XPS with a screen the same spec should work in a Vostro right?
 
Dont count on it. Laptop screens can be pretty specific, as often all you get is the screen, and backlight and circuit board for the actual lcd matrix.

If the cable interface or vga controller isnt 100% compatible it wont work and you are stuck with an expensive paperweight. Physically i may well fit into the housing but thats only half the battle.
 
I was hoping you would not say that :( So is there any list of compatibility between models?
