Heres a problem i came across just recently when trying to put a fresh copy of windows vista on my vostro 1700.As always when recieving a system from dell it includes all their crap installed with the OS,as soon as i got it plugged in i then started to go about installing a fresh copy of vista on my machine.Well i didnt get very far for sure,as soon as it got to the screen with the green line going across the bottom of the display just before it gets to start installing the files,BANG blue screen of death and the system restarts itself.i must have tried six or seven times to install vista with the same results every time, blue screen of death and restart.Well after trawling the dell forums for an hour or so i came across a very helpfull guy who has had the same issues and managed to the find the problem,it is down to the flash cache and sata drive settings,i had to dissable the flash cache and set the sata drive setting to ATA then the install went in without a hitch.Dont know if anyone has come across this problem but i thought i would post it here just incase you run into the same sort of issue, hope this helps.;)

Yep, I had this reently with my 1700 - I ended up installing XP anyway, now it's fast, stable and lightweight.

There is a way to install the correct drivers AFTER you install Vista, if I can find the link I'll post it here :)

EDIT: although the following link mentions XP (this is the guide I used) it should work under Vista?
