My Vostro finally arrived after some delivery problems. I was looking forward to using the last thread to help me find the correct drivers and fixes for any problems I might encounter but it appears to have been deleted :o

Would appreciate it if someone from the previous thread could help me out, or even better if you saved the old thread and could mail it to me ;)

Cheers

What? Deleted?

How come?

My 1500 finally arrived on Thursday and I've just about finished reformatting it to get rid of the Dell rubbish (I did try it for a day with the stock install but wanted to reinstall). Having just done this I may be able to help.

One problem I'm having is the wireless card and WPA encrpytion. A bit of a Google reveals that this is a common problem with the 3945ABG and Vista and the only fix is to not use WPA :(

So yeah perhaps I can help :)

Can't believe that was deleted  Was a useful thread to have as a Vostro owner.

Seems a tad extreme tbh.

Trying a fresh install now. Used the Media direct CD first to add a small partition (as suggested) then went to install the OS and it's just hanging at "Completing Installation" :( Tried again without Media Direct and same thing is happening. Any ideas?

Add the SATA drivers on the supplied drivers disk. You need to add them at the start when you select your drive to install to.

I had the same problem :o

Ah right. Can you just clarify in order what you did, I'm getting stresses with the damn thing and was considering opening it up to make some "hardware reconfigurations" :p

Lol from what I remember:

1. Boot from Vista CD
2. Go through the language choice at the start.
3. At the point where it shows you your current partitions there is an option to add drivers.
4. Select this & pop in the supplied drivers disk.
5. It should now auto install them, or it may give the one option to choose to install. Can't remember exactly but you can't miss it.
6. Once the drivers are installed, swap back to the Vista CD & carry on as before.

Should then install as normal without hanging at the completing stage.

:)

Did you bother with Media Direct?

Did you bother with Media Direct?

No did not think it was something I would ever use.

So I wiped that, plus the recovery partition & created one new partition when setting up Vista at the start to install on.

Works like a dream now, although it did take a fair amount of tweaking once I had Vista installed to get it running as I wanted.

Worth the effort though as it is running great now, really impressed.

Which BIOS drivers are you using? Any other drivers that prove beneficial?

You do realise I'll be having you re-iterate the entire old thread here :D

Have not changed the BIOS. As far as I am aware they are shipped with the latest.

I had a look a week ago & it was still the case then.
