Dell Vostro Laptop Graphics Problem

I have a problem with the screen just showing fuzzy horizontal lines or nothing at all. The laptop boots and I have no problem using an external monitor. I have read that NVIDIA on-board chips for this model are problematic. I am not interested in pursuing Dell for a repair as the unit is well over 5 years old - I just want to get it fully operational again.

MY NO:1 goal is to determine whether the fault is with the graphics chip or the laptop screen (I can get either a screen or motherboard with Intel graphics chip 2nd hand on Ebay at approx. the same price but don't want to shell out until I have a good idea where the fault lies.

Some people say that if I can connect an external monitor then it must be the screen. Others say that the NVIDIA chip can fail on the internal side but can still function on the external side so I am at a loss as to diagnosing which is at fault.

Any help on further diagnostics welcome, Thanks

Currently going through the same thing, although my bumpgate Nvidia chip completely failed and couldn't even get an external screen working.

You can try re-seating the ribbon cable that connects the LCD to the mobo, apart from that all I can say is google I'm afraid.
