Dell vs Dell

Hi gents

Ive got a new PC on order and im trying to decide which monitors Id like to run with it.

Im planning on a surround set-up so I need monitors that will look ok up against each other.

I was really interested in 120hz monitors but the only one in my budget is the LG, but it has the curved bottom which I think will be quite anoying in a surround set up.

So I think ive narrowed the choice down to the Dell UltraSharp U2311h or the Dell Professional P2411H.

The Ultrasharp is an IPS panel which means a slower response time but better viewing angles. Im not to worried about colour acuracy and they will only be used for gaming anyway.

The Pro model is a little bigger and faster. They are roughly the same price.

Any comments or suggestions on which you'd go for and why? I mostly play FPS's and can't decide if a TN panel is the best way to go or not.

Although i can't comment on how good ips panels are for gaming from what i've read and from personal experience with 120hz monitors, that's the way to go if the monitor is primarily for gaming. Although the amount of benefit you get out of 120hz will probably depend more on what fps you play (i'd of thought you'd get more out of it play quake / ut than cod / cs for example).
Digital versus have a good write up on the Acer GD245HQ which is available for around the £220 mark. If gaming is your thing this looks like a good choice! :)

I have a 2407WFP - it's amazing... but.... I bought it a while ago when the market wasn't as competitive. I also don't see the need for 120Hz.

If buying today, I'd probably get a pair of U2311H, reasons:

- A second monitor is very useful, so I'd never have just 1
- Price (essentially BOGOF)
- Matches 1080p, so no black top/bottom
- Slightly easier on the GPU

I recently tested a 3d monitor in both 2d and 3d and didn't really like 3D. I did like 2d in 120hz though, very smooth indeed.

The Acer GD245HQ looks like a decent price but the bezels look a little thick for a decent surround system. Ill google it but I seem to remember hearing a large number of them have a problem with buzzing too.

From a link on this forums ive found this review site which helpfully has input lag listed for some monitors:

Does anyone know where I can find the input lag for the Dell Pro?

Why would you want your PC monitor to match 1080p

Even most movies on my 1080p plasma has black borders,as very very few movies are filmed in 16/9 ratio ;)

IPS tech these days is getting pretty good, the U2311H should have no major problems playing games. 120hz is nice, but i've never experienced it (For me, colour accuracy > perceived smoothness, always. 60 does it fine for me).

The only thing I'd watch out for is if you're sensitive to anti glare coatings, the U23's is pretty harsh. LG suck for anti glare.

going by the input lag times of the link above the Dell u2311H is actually pretty fast! especially for an IPS panel. One of the worst for input lag is the 30" dell which surprised me as its often listed as the ideal gaming monitor.

My old monitor had an anti glare coating. not sure i ever noticed it really. I definitly dont want a glossy screen though, there is a large window behind me.
