I am installing a new hd to a friends dell laptop after the old one died, one issue is that there is no cd key on the base of the laptop i have all the discs that came with the laptop including the recovery disc will this auto input the key or am i going to issues here?

I've got a Dell Latitude D630 with a Windows 7 Recovery CD and it asks for the product key. Seems odd because XP and Vista recognise it's a Dell PC and auto activates.
Lots of Dells, especially newer ones have the coa under the battery

Anyway just reinstall windows that the laptop came with using the dell OS cd, it never asks you for any keys anyway, beauty of Dell computers.
It does for Windows 7. I can't remember whether it asks for the key during the installation or just fails activation after 3 days but either way, the Dell Windows 7 CD's need a key.

+1 for this, Vista Business was the same.
The RECOVERY cd's don't need a product key, but the MS Windows Install discs do, even though they have a Dell Log on them.
