Hi all :)

Got a dell XPS 17 (As advised from OcUK :) ), When I started playing saints row 3 I notice the fans blowing out quite warm air (I have the 9-cell battery) but I don't know the exact temperatures of the parts. It wasn't uncomfortably hot, but warm enough,

I was looking at getting a cooling pad to keep the laptop cold enough whilst playing games, what are the ideal temps for this laptop?

In particular I wanted to get a Cryo LX cooler but couldnt find a stockist in the UK :(
So I started looking at the Zalman NC2000 Notebook Cooler, Would this be the best choice for my laptop? I know the Dell XPS 17's main vent is on the left side, would this affect the performance of this laptop cooler?

(Also, any notes of laptop carrier bags you can pick up from the high street or what brands to look out for would be helpful) :)

After reading many comments on on the heat/fan noise issue during gaming, I think it's just supposed to be that way. I'd also like to know more about the coolers though.

I've been playing games on mine all day and it hasn't blown up yet. :p

Edit: Does your battery stick out, in the shape of a little stand at the back of the laptop? Mine does, which could be a problem when choosing a cooler.

Do you know if the warranty covers said blowing up? :P

Would like to play games all day on mine too, unfortunately playing l4d2 on a trackpad is really awkward! :( (Went to the shops to today to look for an xbox 360 controller but sold out of the wired ones :( wasn't sure whether to buy a cheap mouse later so I left that too!)

Yup, I opted for the 9-Cell battery as I thought it would help a bit with air flow / cooling. However I think you may be able to take out the battery and just leave it plugged in instead if you wish.

Get a thermoter to the air coming out the Lappy, It should be around 80c - 90c from what I've read. (I'm researching Lappys for a DTR for myself) If it gets up to the 100c then you have issues, I'm worried for you though mate as if it's running warm now when its new & superclean inside what's it gonna be like in 3 months time when it's full of dust that it's sucked in.
These issues put me right off the XPS range, Sorry to **** on your fire just letting you know what I know. :(

I don't think mine was 80c-90c, but then again I'm not the acute with temperatures! and I'm don't think I have any thermometers around here either unfortunately. I'll probably keep a can or two to clean the vents every so often though. Might pick up that cooling pad just in case then!

Edit: Should note that the temperature of the air only increases during games, and is usually quite cold, even after closing the game. Haven't read about any cooling issues before so I'm led to agree that it's supposed to be that way.

This is driving me absolutely insane! My fan turns on for 1 second, then off for 1 second, then on again. The cycle never stops, regardless of what I'm doing on it.

Anyone else having this problem?

Mine occasionally speeds up for awhile when I laucn G-Mod, but then slows down. The fans might speed up occasionally when I launch the browser, but when they slow down after a few seconds they usually stay that way. Haven't noticed it any other time, and not quite constantly on/off either.

Maybe I'm being too paranoid about the cooling!
